Subject: Ticking sound when cold IP: Logged
Message: I just had some major repairs done to my 2001 Dakota 4.7 QC. First of all my radiator cracked. Got that fixed. Then I had a bad knocking sound when cold, and coolant in the exhaust. Got that fixed which required engine rebuild: gaskets, seals, bearings, etc. Also got the heads resurfaced (they were warped). Replaced burned plugs. The mechanic totally checked out the entire engine.
I just don't understand. When the radiator cracked, I never let it overheat. It got pretty hot a couple of times, but never did the guage go in the red.
So now after all that, it still has a mild ticking sound when cold. After it warms up a little (about 2 min.), it runs great. The mechanic said he could not find anything else wrong with the engine. He did not know why it still ticks, but he said it was fine and not to worry about the ticking. He went through the entire motor and it's 100% ok.
Now that I have it back it runs great, even better than when I first bought it. That damn ticking just bothers me. Is there anything else I can do? I can't bitch to the mechanic, he's my dad's friend and he only charged us for the parts and only a little labor. The total cost for the engine rebuild was $1350.
Please help!

Message: In my experience the 4.7 likes a 'thinner' oil
(in Canadian climate anyway..)
tried 10W30..ticks for 2 min. when cold,
use 5W30 or 5W20..no startup ticks at all
talking summertime here, mid-90s not winter
faster oil delivery to lash adjusters or chain tensioners ?
dont know but it works..

Message: Also stay away from FRAM oil filters or clones that are rebadged. They also can cause this as they allow the oil to leak down over night.

Message: good point OBIO3 about cheap anti-drain back
valves on some filters
stay away from FRAMs & re-badged FRAMs
"Penzoil" filters etc.

Message: Have used Castrol SynBlend 5W30 since I bought the truck used with 32K on it. Currently have 97k and no problems at all with ticking. I used NAPA Gold Filters. Used to use FRAMS in my wife 98 Breeze, but since I went to NAPA filters in her car, no ticks either.
