Subject: Oil filter with check valve? IP: Logged
Message: Had a Dodge parts manager tell me the other day that mopar's oil filters have a check valve in them to keep all the oil from draining down into the pan which obviously keeps some lube up top which is good for cold start-ups. He said there aren't many other filters available that have this feature. Anyone know anything about this?

Message: He`s an idiot, all filters spec`d for your motor will have one. Hard to find a filter without one. Mopar filters are nothing special and are made by Champion Labs or some other company that won the bid.

Message: I use a NAPA Gold 1085 on my '01 4.7. It has the little flap to prevent drain back, and holds about twice the oil of the OEM-size 4.7 filter. I've used "318" size filters on all my Mopars since 1985.

Message: NAPA Gold filters that fit on a 4.7l
stock size: 1085 , 3.8" long
approx. 1 quart cap: 1515 , 5.1" long
approx. 2 quart cap: 1773 , 7" long
I run the 1773 for extra capacity and extended oil changes, cutting 4" or so off the plastic drain 'funnel' below the filter (RAM 1500) makes it easier to fit onto the engine block.

Message: If you're looking for the largest oil filter that fits the Dakota 4.7,
try WIX 51773. Same as the NAPA 1773 that 911mike listed.

Message: The parts manager is not an idiot. Certain filters DO have a anti CHECK (not anti drain back or By pass valve). Not every application needs this.
Now it is true that other filter mfgs do make filters with anti check valves, they are product specific.
Use the filter spec'd for your engine. It will be a-ok

Message: FL-1 filter fits the 4.7 and holds a qt of oil. Better than that short thing they want you to use.
