Subject: unsteady idle/sluggy shifting IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I`ve been watching the characteristics of the trucks idle on cool/cold mornings and warm/comfortable mornings. When it`s rather cool(30-50 degrees or so) it`ll crank up and idle perfect but take forever to shift into O/D no matter how long I let it warm (in park or neutral). Now, when it`s 60-70 or so outside it won`t idle worth a crap but it`ll shift just fine into O/D. Since I work nights these are first thing in the morning crankings. TPS? IAC? What? Oh yeah it`s a `00 quad cabber, 4.7 auto

Message: There is a temperature sensor that stops the trany from going into OD when the temperature is somewhere below zero. Sounds like yours has malfunctioned.

Message: If that temp sensor has gone bad and the engine thinks it is colder than it really is that would also explain the bad idle concern when it is warmer. The computer will spray more fuel to try to warm the engine up faster even though it is not cold causing it to run really rich. It's like leaving the choke on in a carburated car.

Message: Okay, that makes sense. Where is the temp sensor located?

Message: You have a lot of temp sensors. Incoming Air Temp(IAT),Coolant,Trans Fluid(might be yor culprit),and Battery temp.From the FSM;
"A failure in the trans temp sensor or circuit will result in calculated temp being substituted for actual temp. Calculated temp ia a predicted fluid temp which is calculated from a combination of inputs:
Battery(ambient)temp
Engine coolant temp
In-gear run time since start-up"
Not so simple is it. If your not getting a code thrown it would be hard to figure out. You may have a lazy sensor or sensors still operating within spec so they are causing problems but no code.

Message: Well, they ain`t throwing any codes. So where are these babies located or do I need to get an idiot book. I appreciate all the advice so far.

Message: How long is "forever" to shift into OD when cold out,more than a couple miles? Is it coming up to full temp or running cold(stuck open,slow thermastat)? Is the idle 600-650 below 50 and 500 when warmer?

Message: It doesn`t matter whether I let the engine warm-up or not. I`ve actually sat in the parking lot at work (5 a.m. 30 some odd degrees outside) and let it get ~toasty~ inside, idling in neutral, putting the tranny in gear (f & r) a few times and it still took about 3 1/2 to 4 miles to go into O/D after reaching high gear. Now if the temp outside is in the 60`s the idle is real rough at first but it catches on finally but I can go on ahead and leave with no probs at all shifting. Also on those cold mornings it idles almost perfect, so...
