Subject: Is KRC Performance kinda pricey? IP: Logged
Message: Just want to see what all you guys think, I am trying to deside on if I want to do a 360/408 engine swap in my 2004 rc 4.7L dakota or if i just wanted to spend the money on the 4.7 block and build off of it. I was looking at parts for the 4.7 on krc they seemed pricey so i thought i would check out the engines they want 6,500 dollars for their 430 hp 360 motor but here: http://www.mopartsracing.com/parts/blocks.html
I can get a 402 for 6,100 or a 360 shooting 390hp for 4400 now can some one explain that to me? less price more power?? or is krc just more price less bang

Message: That depends on if you are comparing two identical engines. By your prices a 402hp engine will cost you 6100 and a 430hp engine will cost you 6500. 400 dollars for 25hp isnt too bad a deal expecially if that difference is because of using better heads maybee 2.02, 1.60 valves instead of 1.92, 1.60. Now you can get a Mopar Performance crate 360 390hp for roughly 3700 on summit racing. But that is comparing apples to oranges unless the engines are made from the same type of parts. One may have a cast bottom end one may have forged etc, etc. Also not all crate motors come with the same amount of the motor assembled one may have a distributor already, or an intake manifold, or water pump, etc.

Message: If you go down the path of swapping the engine, you'll also need to swap the tranny. The 5-45RFE won't work without the PCM and engine you presently have in the truck. There are a lot of other technical things to overcome (guages, etc.), but this is one of the biggest.
I'd say you are better off coughing up large $$$ and build up your present engine with what is available: Paxton or Novi supercharger, fab your own turbo, nitrous (if you want to live dangerously). :-)

Message: yeah I think I am gonna put the money into this engine. there are a lot of performance parts for it on krc. how many ponys u think i would get if i put on a paxton supercharger, 72mm tb, cams, headers, volant intake(I need something better than this 40 dollar one that came on the truck when i bought it), full ported heads, the cam cal pcm flash, and i'm gonna put in 4.10 or 4.56 gears. do you think i should swap out my rear axle?

Message: I think you can get big numbers out of a 4.7 if you do all of that. 4.10 gears will probably be better with as much power as you will be making. I have 4.56s in my 02 4.7 and my 60ft times are s#!+ at best (2.3 60ft), if I had slicks it would be better. On street tires 1st gear is useless. I can't floor it untill 2nd. With the overdrive off at the 1/4 mile mark 96mph is 6000rpms in 4th gear. I'm going to be taking the 4.56s out and putting them in my 4x4 dakota when i have a matching set for the front axle, because my times before the gears were actually .4 seconds faster but at the same time 5mph slower (was able to get off the line .2 faster with stock 3.55s but the 4.56s helped a load top end).
If you have the 9.25 rear you should be alright but if you only have the 8.25 definately try to find a stronger replacement.

Message: The 9.25 has an octagonal cover, while the 8.25 is round if you need to figure out what you have. Ever hear of anyone dynoing a gain with that volant intake you are considering ? The only one I've ever seen to dyno a gain is the K&N - they took a long time to develope it and wouldn't release it until they could show a gain.

Message: thanks kowalski for the info on the rear end. and i have not seen a dyno page for the volant intake so i might check out k&N. I just need something other than this autozone crap. The guy never gave me the stock one when i got my truck or else i would put that back in

Message: Take the time to call KRC and get to know them. Ask about technical support, warranties, anything else that might make the extra money worth it.
