Message: LOL I was just going to mention something about the t-stat mod on another thread.
I dont think it does diddly squat to change the t-stat on the 4.7
I have a 180 in it now. i even tried a 160 for a while.
But if you think about it. the ONLY reason a colder coolant would give ANY power is on older intakes with coolant running through them that is heating up the incoming air and killing power.
The 4.7 using a plastic intake and NO water circulates through it. So running it any cooler doesn't mean anything. Going too cold and on cold nights it would actually make it stay in OPEN LOOP mode longer.

Message: GD,
This is true, But, without my belt driven clutch and fan, and only the stock elec fan, my Dak always run real cool, just inside the lower hash mark, even here in SE TX.
I like the fact my engine is staying a little cooler. And NO, it's not making any more measurable power Just from the t-stat change.

Message: MIke E,
Sorry I forgot to answer your question. As GD will tell you,
The t-stat for the 4.7, is also the same as the 5.2and 5.9. Get a 180 for a 5.9.
When you do the change, do some research first, it's easy! You'll use the same rubber o-ring gasket, and just cut a little notch corresponding to the one you took out, near the outer rim. I used a pair of wire snips to do it. Don't overtorque the small bolts, the housing is plastic, not metal.

Message: Yup, what Todd said.
And you will never have changed a thermostat that was so damn easy before!!!!
The t-stat is UNDER the truck. You have to remove that plastic splash gaurd thingie.
Two small bolts and the o-ringed t-stat drops out. Just use a bucket to catch what drains out. Keep the radiator cap on so it doesn't drain much while the t-stat cover is apart.
Do not use any sealant. Just put the o-ring onto the new t-stat.

Message: I've run a 180 stat in my '01 4.7 for about 6 months now. The only notable difference in my case was weaning the Dak off 80/20 mix of 87/93 octane gas. If I ran 100 percent 87 octane with the 195 stock stat, the engine would (minor) ping under load uphill. Runs perfectly fine on 87 now.
