Subject: X-Pipe IP: Logged
Message: I want to build an X-pipe exhaust for my 4.7. I have looked at GS motorsports dual exhaust setup but think its way overpriced. I am thinking of getting a magnaflow x-pipe but am looking for advice on what size tubing and what cats and mufflers to go with. I have a Gibson single swept side exhaust now, but its rusted. I like how its not too loud.....but i dont mind making some more noise either....ideas?

Message: true duals on the dodge pickup's isnt the brightest idea.... the gas tank is in the way.... you'll have to use a single in dual out muffler.... so cancel out the x pipe....

Message: You can run true duals on the 4.7 all you have to do is run both pipes on the passenger side of the truck and it will help that motor a lot just by getting rid of the stock y-pipe.
Been there done that I didnt realize how over priced the system from GSMotorsports was untill i had already bought it. It works though, sounds awesome!

Message: I run dual pipes from the cats to a DI/DO Flowmaster 70 series, then dual out the side in front of the RH tire, all piping 2.25".
All pipes mandrel bend and joints welded by
a custom race car/fabrication shop.
As mentionned above, because of the LH location
of the gas tank, all pipes & muffler run down the RH side of the truck (RAM 1500 SC/SB).
After previously experimenting with a custom made hi-flow Y-pipe and a single 2.5" muffler/pipe,
the small diameter, dual in/out (thru a single large muffler) as given the best performance overall in the 1500 to 4000 rpm range,
the larger diameter single did feel stronger above 4500 rpms, but the increase in low end makes up for that now.

Message: What's wrong with side pipes? Just take your exhaust out around the frame and do side pipes.
Sounds funny, because of the idiotic firing order of the V-8, but looks good.

Message: i think the x pipe is a great idea goon!
you pick up the exhaust pulse from the other side and really helps to build more trq.
& kota kid is on the money
just run the pipes exiting the Xpipe down the passenger side
out back you can route the other back if you wanted and get the dual tails out back
ok an kyle yes duals alone do sound odd sometimes due to firing orders
however with the X or even H pipe you again get the "pulse" (mentioned) from the other side and it helps to balance out the sound

Message: thats the first i have heard of GS Motorsports... i didnt know that someone out there made a true dual exhuast like that.... ive seen people run two pipes down the right side and lay 2 mufflers upright side by side but have not seen anyone till now offer a setup like that....
kota kid.... did that exhuast system have the correct locations for the O2 sensors and if so i think im gonna look into that setup cause im going to be needing a new exhuast soon...

Message: Yep the oxygen sensors are in the right places and with the high flow cats I haven't seen the check engine light yet in nearly 15,000 miles. It works very well really opens the motor up top end but it is over priced. If you don't like loud exhaust you won't like that system though as it is noticeably louder than the flowmaster 40 series that was on the truck when I bought it.

Message: thanks for all the replies!
after reading all that i have one more question. How much would it cost to have a muffler shop or whoever
actually do the work? I think i would want to do a setup that looks like the gsmotorsports but with other parts

Message: as mentionned above, my duals from cats to muffler
and then out the RH side near the tire was $250 (in Canada) price not including muffler.
All pipes were mandrel bent and welded as one complete system with custom made hangers to fit the stock ones on the frame.
not cheap but beats many trips to the parts store for pre-bent pipes as a DYI project,
or 'crushed' tubing from a regular exhaust pipe bender.
a custom made 'X' would cost a small fortune in labor,
better off buying one from Magnaflow and having it installed.

Message: apart from racing/fabrication shops,
check out large truck & equipment shops
for custom exhaust work, they most likely
have mandrel bending tools/dies.

Message: If you go the custom route definately try to find someone that can mandrell bend the pipes. 2.5in mandrell bent pipes will flow the same amount of air as 3in crush bent pipes. Also make sure they get the o2 sensors in the right places or you will be looking at that annoying little orange light in your instrument cluster (check engine). If you dont want cats you can get cat boxes or o2 simulators but you wont notice any gain in performance by not having high flow cats. Have had high flow cats on mine for 15,000 miles and haven't seen the check engine light yet.
