Subject: Chip for the 5.9? IP: Logged
Message: I was talking to someone at the Dodge Dealer while I was getting my front end aligned and he told me about some new chip that has come out to help increase the fuel mileage. Now that guy was asking if the chip worked for a 4.7L and that the chip was designed for the 5.9L engine. Does anyone have any real info on this chip?

Message: Come on! You think anyone with the 360 is worried about fuel economy here? They have too much fun driving them. And by reading posts, they are more interested in getting more power with superchargers, turbos, better gearing, and what have you. But, with more power usually comes worse mileage. My R/T is bone stock and I don't race it. I still get around 12-13 mpg, though I can get 17 on a trip.

Message: Which chip are you referring to ? Some have been well received by people here, others are said to be junk. A chip that increases ignition timing can help milage as well as performance, and results can depend on how you drive. I'd think a different model for the 4.7, diferent ignition management; but you're not being specific enough with the details about your mystery chip...

Message: Kowalski, I'm not sure. I was talking to a guy that was at the Dealer and he had heard about a chip, that was mostly made for the 5.9 that would improve gas mileage. I really don't have any idea why little jer started sounding off about. If there is a chip that will help increase the mileage, it would be nice to use that chip while I drive my 90 miles to and from the ship for the weekend. Not everyone wants to throw that money away like little jer. All I want to know is if there is any ifo on the chip....

Message: Yes, changing the tuning parameters can improve fuel mileage. One of the tricks to getting better mileage is to make the engine burn the fuel more efficiently. That also manages to produce more power if done right.
I used a Hypertech tuner on my 5.9. At the mid grade level, I run on mid grade fuel and it gets slightly better mileage than stock. There's a definate power and driveability improvement. I also tried it on the premium level. It pinged something terrible with premium fuel, I didn't notice a power increase, and fuel mileage dropped like a stone.

Message: .boB, was there an increase in mileage with regular grade? Did is decrease any existing ping? My 5.9 presently pings when I really stomp on it. Do you have any brand, description or anything i can use to look the chip up, or even a web site that I can check it out? Thanks for the come back

Message: The brand is called Hypertech. They have their own web site. I got mine from Summit Racing, but there are a number of places to shop from.
It won't run well on regular fuel, have to run mid grade. The increase in mileage matches the increased fuel costs, so it's a wash. And I like the way it drives with the new program.
I found that when I'm towing my Cobra on a hot day, it would ping a little on heavy throttle - like freeway on ramps. I switched to a lower temp thermostat, added Redline Water Wetter, and that problem nearly went away. If the temps are 95*ish+ and I'm towing, I'll add a tank of premium. The extra $2-3 is worth it.
As a side note, I previously tried a lower temp thermostat without a change in the program. Ran like crap, and mileage dropped noticably. But with the re-program, the lower temps really help.

Message: Wow Bob you the first guy I have heard say anything good about Hyper chip that’s good I’m glad it worked out for you. I would like to put my two scents in on this the superchip is a good chip also.It has three settings it has a economy setting for regular grade gas that I have seen a little improvement on gas mpg or so(Little more pep in the truck not as much as the performance setting). It has a torque setting that has to be ran on premium(Lot off acceleration down Low at 1500 2000 rpm but takes a hit on the gas) and a performance setting that has to be ran on premium also. I actually get better mpg on the performance setting and good acceleration Low end and mid range but you got to pay 2:52 a gallon in Michigan for it price per gallon kind of kills the gains so the economy setting is good for me right now. I have heard the Superchips works better for automatic transmissions.

Maybe because I'm not racing, or doing anything radical. It's a simple and basic reprogrammer. When I was shopping, the Superchips had more features; but I didn't need them. You get what you pay for, I guess.

Message: If your dakota is pinging bad stock, you may have a intake gasket leak.Look down inside your throttle body.If you see oil.you got a leak.
Power programming wont help this at all. This a a common leak.I had the same thing.
