Subject: PCV Operation IP: Logged
Message: I recently replaced my pcv since it was "gunked up" Lately I've noticed that when my truck is running (at idle) the valve cycles rapidly as if the valve is opening and closing during each revolution or stroke. The vacuum is steady so it doesn't make much sense. Can someone please put their finger on theirs and tell me if it's doing the same thing? Thanks!

Message: The PCV system only vents crankcase gases. This has nothing to do with valve operation. Don't know where you get that.

Message: Sorry if my message was unclear. I should have written "the PCV valve cycles" Didn't mean engine valves. Anyway, I've found past entries on this forum that discussed the exact symptoms I am having. Their fix was a higher quality PCV valve.

Message: The PCV valve has engine intake vacuum on one side, to vent crankcase vapors and stuff. If there's a lot of blow-by in your engine, it will cause the PCV valve to rattle during engine operation.
All engines have blow-by to some degree, and it's normal to have a small amount.
You can check for it by opening the oil fill port while the engine is idling. If a breeze is coming outa there, you got some blow-by, and could mean piston rings not sealing.
could mean your overdue for an oil change, too.

Message: As for the rattling, yes, that's 100% normal. It's a ball inside of the unit bouncing. The ball acts like a check valve.

Message: I bought one at O'Reilley's for about $2.75 that sounded like I had a huge hornet trapped under the hood. Replaced it with one that I bought at the dealership for about twice the money, and the hornet disappeared.

Message: PCV valve is one of those items needs to be bought from the dealer. After market PCV valves are universal meaning so called insignificate items are altered so they will work on more brands of engines.
These changes are workable on some engines but not on others .Our engines are in the second group.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Hey OBI03, you're right. I spent a few more bucks than Autozone and went to the dealer for an original. Problem is gone! Sometimes it just doesn't pay to go cheap.

Message: My 2000 factory shop manual shows the 4.7L PCV mounted on the side of the oil filler tube. To remove it, 1. Disconnect the PCV line/hose. 2.Remove the valve by rotating it downward(counter-clockwise) until the lock tabs are freed at the cam lock and remove it. There's also an o-ring that seals the PCV.
