Subject: Where does this 5.9 wire connector go?
IP: Logged

Message:
HI guys-
I realize this is on a 5.9 Durango but I hope the harness is the same. The fuel injector wire harness (drivers side) toward the back of the manifold.... there is a connector/pigtail between the #7injector plug and the distributor pickup plug. It is a 3 wire connector. I can't figure out where it goes. Any help is greatly appreciated. Almost have this motor back together.

Thanks,
Steve H.

That sounds like your camshaft position sensor plug. Does the truck start up??

No. I just tried to start the truck this morning and it just cranked. Where is the cam sensor? I thought that the cam sensor was the same as the distributor pickup. The distrib is already connected. It has a gray plug. This one that's not connected is black. Am I confusing the 2? A wire/plug could have slipped down behind the block.... I just have to look a little closer.

Maybe the crankshaft sensor? Where does that usually tie/plug in? I'll have to find the crank sensor and follow the wire harness.

Thanks,

Yeah that was it!!! The crankshaft sensor behind the head. But now the motor still won't start. Time to do some troubleshooting.

Thanks,

Have you had the distributor out of the engine? If you have had it out, it could be 180* off. I had that problem when I rebuilt my 318. To check the positioning of it, get the engine to TDC (#1 cylinder on compression stroke), then pull off the distributor cap and check the position of the rotor. The rotor should be aligned with the #1 spark plug. I hope this helps.

if you have someone to click the key over for you
i can give you an easy method for getting the motor to TDC/compression stroke

pull the #1 plug out
put thumb or finger tight over the hole
(seal for air)
have someone just click the key to barely get the motor to move
repeat this till you feel a good push of air on your finger (sometime hiss or a good pop sound)
now check your balancer
rotate it to TDC (and it wont be far from it)
pop the dist. cap and make sure rotor is on #1

find out from one of the other guys if you need to ground the #1 plug wire
or if its ok to just lay on the motor/valve cover
(or where ever)

Yes I've had the distrib out.... had the heads off and the timing set apart. I would swear it went back in right but I'll check it anyhow. I bought this truck in non-running condition so I hope it's just the distrib position (although it's a pain to get to!

Thanks for the info.... I'll let you know what I find.

It's Alive!!!!! The distrib was 180 out. Started right up after I popped the distributor and moved the rotor. Now I just have to check for leaks and take it for a drive. Otherwise it runs great and is smooth and quiet (except for that wind blaster radiator fan).

Thanks for the help,
Steve H.

Hey, glad to hear it, Steve! That's really frustrating when the engine won't even sputter, let alone start up and run. Like I said, it happened to me with my 318 when I rebuilt it.
