Subject: 5.2 to 5.9 swap IP: Logged
Message: i have a 2000 durango with the 5.2 and the engine siezed in it. i can get a replacement 5.9 cheaper than i can get a 5.2 so why shouldn't i put the bigger one in right? lol.
anyway, will everything from my old engine bolt to the 5.9? will the wiring harness work? any other suprises i should be worried about?

Message: Yeah, it'll bolt up. You do need the properly weighted flexplate for the 1996 or newer 360 Magnum. You can use your original torque converter. Get the appropriate 360 Magnum computer and have it flashed so the odometer, anti-lock, etc will work properly.

Message: what would happen if i didn't get the 360 computer right away?
and in an effort to save either time or money or both, can my 318 computer be flashed to work with the 360?
i assume any engine performance shop can reprogram a computer right?

Message: Ahhhh, not sure just how far those OBDII's can be tweaked, but I'd bet it'd be considerably cheaper to buy the OEM than pay for custom programming (even if it's just a flash job. And no, I wouldn't trust it to just any performance shop. It'd run on the 318 computer, but not very well.

Message: well, i got the old engine out, turns out the #6 rod melted and broke. and was jamed between the engine block and crank not allowing it to turn. so i can rebuild it and put it in my jeep :D
anyway the new 360 is being delivered today. hopefully i'll get it in by this weekend and all should go well.

Message: also something to think about is...
go to a junk yard. you never know if there is a 2000 durango or dakota or whatever that had the 5.9 in it. if thats the case, ive seen computers go as low as $10 from a junk yard. yes $10.00 .
but i would probably expect to pay about $100.00.

Message: $100 is about the average i've found at salvage yards. and none of the u-pull-it yards i go to have ever had a durango.

Message: You might try car-part.com, many salvage yards together online. I paid $80 for a spare for my truck when it was only abut 2 years old. They get cheaper as they get older.

Message: Ha guys the computer that is in your truck will work for the new eng.Your computer works off of your vin No# of that truck, and I dont think you will have any luck in the junk yard finding a com that will work on your truck. You wont need a flash for a stock eng but if you want a flash anyway, there is only one place to go and that is KRC in Fla.The comp that you found in the junk yard you need to give it a try and you can see for your self,IT WONT WORK. Good luck give Marty a call at KRC he will be glad to help.

Message: Once the OBDII computer is flashed with the appropriate information, meaning the VIN for your truck, the computer WILL work, as long as it's matched for the engine/tranny it's intended to be used with.

Message: well my first snag is the oil pan. the durango has that special shaped oil pan that goes around their cross member. the dodge ram pan that came with the new engineobviously won't fit. so i'm looking for a durango 360 oil pan. none of the local yards have one and auto zone only wants $60 for one.
as for the computer, i'm still gonna just hook it up and see what happens with my stock 318 computer. but i'm not optimistic about it being plug n play. so if it doesn't work, shoul i just flash my old one for the extra displacement? or buy a new one from a 360 and flash it to work with the rest of my drivetrain?
looking for the cheapest functional solution.

Message: the gasket part #'s are different between the 360 and 318 which would lead me to believe they have different pans, but even if they were the same, when the rod in my 318 broke it damaged the oil pan right on top of the dipstick channel making it pretty much useless.

Message: James Conaway - you are mistaken to say another PCM won't run our trucks. There are incompatible PCMs; seems to depend on factory alarm package - but many can work once the vin # is flashed into them. For my 4.7, I didn't even need to do that - the spare ran my truck fine, didn't throw any codes either while I was having the stock PCM flashed for performance.

Message: JeepXLC, the part numbers are different on the Magnum engine oil pan gaskets are different because the gaskets are different, but the pans are the same, at least in the flange areas. The 318 and 360 LA have different size flanges on their oilpans, but the Magnums are 360LA sized. Mopar makes one pan work with 2 sizes of gaskets to fit 318/360 Magnum as needed.

Message: well the stock computer was left unplugged for 3 weeks. i think it's adapting to the new engine very well. the extra power/torque on tap is ungodly. it's pretty sweet.
i have a couple leaks to address in the cooling system but otherwise it's a simple swap.
the only "custom" thing i had to do was put a grinder to a small part of the engine block so the 5.2 starter would fit.

Message: i had an issue on finding a computer when mine went out, but i found a newer dodge van with a 360, and put that into my 5.2 DAK and it has been running better than ever since, and that was two months ago.
