Subject: tranny shifts late under light throttle IP: Logged
Message: so i just bought this dakota
and when cruising under light throttle it stays in gear till over
2300-2500 RPM then shifts
this happens through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd like it has a shift kit or
something, but it doesnt
i took it to a tranny place to have it flushed out and it still goes on
it is an A500 a.k.a. 44RE transmission
thanks for your help

Message: yea man reset the computer. i BET it would help your shifting issue too. those 44RE's have electronically controlled shifting.

Message: Don't trust what the overhead computer says - mine has never been right. Do it manually, divide miles travelled by gallons used.

Message: toolfan,
do you mean the MPG computer? or the truck computer?
because i have reset the MPG computer and it says 11.6 and im not
driving her too hard
rustywrenches,
yeah i never did... im going to do that soon
so far, its lookin like im only gonna get 220 miles out of the tank.
18 gallon tank i believe
do the math and thats about 12 mpg
how many miles do you V8ers get out of a tank and how many gallon
do you have?

Message: Its much more accurate to figure actual miles per gallon when you fill up. Miles per tank is way too arbitrary; nor is the computer always accurate. I get 15-16, but that's with the 4.7.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: The 318s in the Daks were not known for the greatest gas mileage. The 4.7 is better, and my 04 QC 4x4 w/ Leer cap gets 21 mpg hiway in the warmer weather at 65 mph. That is normal gas mileage, but I have squeezed a little more a time or two.
As for the overhead computer, I have checked it against the math and it is accurate to within one tenth of a mile per gallon. Guess some are not accurate. Have to check them now and again and if they run "off" at a constant amount, then just factor that into the readout.

Message: on the 44re i think that the overdrive is the only electrical controled part? thats why they have a kick down cable. if it was the newer trans that comes behind the 4.7L the "45-rfe" it has a shift solenoid pack in the oil pan so its shifts are all electronical controled shifts.
yeah i meant reset the mpg computer. the one in are jeep is way off to.
if you ever fuel up your tank all the way rest you trip meter and drive than when you fuel up divide the amount you put in the tank into the trip amount.
here was my last one. 222miles divided by 16.2gallons = 13.7mpg. ok mileage for off-roading sliding around on wet roads and hauling about a 1000pounds in the bed.
