Subject: differences in 5.2L IP: Logged
Message: Hi - we just bought a 94 Jeep Gr Cherokee with the same engine as my 99 Dakota (5.2L). The redline is higher and the engine feels like it has more punch. Did the jeep get some sort of high perf mods that the Daks didn't? Can I steal em and put em on my Dak?!! :)

Message: I don't think so - might be different gearing; also might be a lighter vehicle. The Dakota has a full frame; isn't the Jeep a lighter unibody design ?

Message: I don't know the weight difference, but that doesn't explain why the redline is so much higher. Cams? PCM?

Message: How much higher ? Actually higher marked on the tach; or just noticing different rpms when it shifts ? What are the redlines as marked on the tachs ?

Message: actually marked on the tach as redline at 5250, and it does happily rev that high when floored.

Message: the 94 jeep has a OBD1 computer and the dakota has a OBD2. OBD2 came out in 96. the engines have the same power, but they probably lowered the rev limiter on the OBD2 computers. other than that, i dont think your 99 dak has EGR. BUUUUTTT, other than that, the engines are identical in every way. Your jeep probably has lower gears too.

Message: Also, the kickdown might be adjusted differently. That alone can account for several hundred rpms difference in shift points.

Message: So both actually redline ar 5250; the redlines are actually the same ? Gearing, weight differences, and kickdown adjustment could easily explain the deiffernce you percieve. This is the first I've ever heard anyone guess they lowered the rev limit on OBD II, not sure if there's really anything to that. Weren't most jeeps 3.73 gears; and most Dakotas 3.55 ?
