$35, dude you are getting hosed. Oil and Filter is like $10 at Walmart. Change it yourself and save, plus it helps you get to know your truck better and its basically checking up underneath the engine for damage, loose parts etc. I think you have to change it while its either raining or really windy, otherwise its just too easy. I love it when the oil comes out vertical, who needs gravity when you have a pressure head. My 02 manual says something rediculous like 7000 miles, always change oil at 3000 miles or 3 months. Its too cheap not too.

Well, the filter I use(Mobile 1) is more than $10 itself, and the oil is $18 for Mobile 1 synthetic in a 5qt jug. Don't know what type of oil and filter you use, but they must not be very good quality. For being a project engineer you'd think you'd want to take better care of yor truck.

First of all the Dakota is a truck, not a damn corvette. Why do you think Vette's come from the factory with Mobil 1? They are high performance engines with tighter tolerances and need synthetic. It makes them run cleaner and reduces friction versus non synthetic oil. A truck does not need synthetic and if you think it does you don't know jack and are wasting your money. And what I do for a living is irrelevent, most engineers don't know anything about cars. The ones I went to school with didn't know which end of a screwdriver to use. I use the Fram TG16 with an anti-drain back valve. A $5 filter, this is all you need, not teflon impregnated or some other crap that people substantiate for being superior. I also use Havoline or Valvoline 5W-30 depending on what's available and I only run Chevron, no Amoco here. What engine do you have anyway HSKR? If you had a balanced and blueprinted 360 with a blower that had an oil pan tap, then I could see where you would need Synthetic. But otherwise you and the rest of the people that put it in their "Trucks" are wasting your money. And I don't care how expensive oil is or what their mileage claim, I would always change oil at 3000 miles. Its just not worth saving a few bucks. $5 a quart for oil, screw that.

I like you post and it is my understanding that
you have not done very much research on Synthetics
because if you had you would not have posted it in the
first place.

Whether you like it or not you will be using Synthetics
one day because of EPA regulations and the federal
governments tighter C.A.F.E. regulations (Corporate
Average Fuel Economy) .

In fact I bet you have Synthetic Oil in you truck already
and do not even know it.

Concerning Mobil1 - GM approached and asked for bids
from several different Synthetic Oil manufacturers and
Mobil 1 "gave" them the best deal (a Mobil employee
gave me that information).

A Dodge Dakota may be a truck but the tolerances are
the same as most any other water cooled engine, just
ask any machine shop or consult a repair manual.

The 4.7 is a pretty sophisticated engine and if I
invested that kind of money into a new truck I would be
using the best oil money could buy.

I agree with Dr. D. I think QwikKota has lost his mind. The tolerances of an engine really have no effect on which oil you use. It is plain and simple facts that synthetic provides better lubrication, protects against wear, lasts longer, and provides better fuel economy/ performance than conventional. A Fram oil filter is a piece of crap. Purolator or Wix is a good filter for cheap. I read something once before where Freightliner did a test on one of their engines using synthetic oil. They put 750,000 miles on the engine, and never changed the oil. They did regular filter changes and topped off, and that was it. The engine showed no abnormal signs of wear with "never changed" synthetic oil. As far as price, my oil changes run $20-25, and I change it myself. This is with Purolator Premium Plus and Mobil 1 tri-synthetic. Well worth it if you ask me. My .02!!!

Well you guys let me know when you roll over 750,000 miles. How can the tolerances not matter? The tighter the tolerances the better lubrication you need. All engines have different tolerances, that's why cars cost different amounts. Quality. I only plan on driving my 4.7L for 100,000 miles, when the extended warranty runs out. Regular oil will work fine for this amount of miles. Dakota's do not come from the factory with synthetic, other wise I would USE it. I am not all that concerned with saving the $10 but its unneccesary to run synthetic. If I had a Corvette or a Porsche I would run synthetic because that is what they require. Do you run 93 octane just because its better? I tried it in my truck and it ran like crap. Unless you have modified the computer 87 octane is what is required and all it needs. Lost my mind? Odd comment over an oil topic. All I am saying is that its not NECESSARY, I am not arguing that synthetics properties are superior, then you could say I lost my mind, or some other ludicrous comment.

I've read that oil never wears out, be it synthetic or non-synthetic.Theoretically, they were saying, all you had to do was change the filter and top off. That is why recycling the oil is such a big push now days. Cheaper refining used oil to clean out the impurities than cracking a whole new batch from crude.

BUT the multi-viscosity oil (I think it was polymers they mentioned will break down) would eventually become a single viscosity oil (ie, 5W-30 becomes same as 5W).

BUT... there are combustion byproducts that pass by the rings that enter the oil. Some of these combustion byproducts are formed from sulfur in the fuel and are acidic. The acidic byproducts can get into the porous bearing metals and cause degradation through corrosion and oxidation.

The article went on to say that it was prudent to change the oil frequently due to the combustion byproducts building up over time.

Synthetic.... a very well engineered oil, used in aircraft engines, for better lubrication, as well as beaing able to disipate heat better.

Regular Oil.. Do you really wanna run dinasour $hit through your investment? Doesn't matter how long your keeping the truck, Synthetic will improve alot in an engine, and you will see better performance. As well, its clean, there is no foreign matter in there, like carbon.

I will start buy saying that I am a firm beliver in synthetic oils and only use them now. With this said I will also say that alot of cars have made it 200,000-400,000 miles on regular oil and 3000 mile oil and filter changes. The thing is they are usualy on their last leg at this point. They are usualy burning alot of oil and need to be rebuilt. Until 6 months ago all of the vechiles I had seen hit 300,000-400,000 miles on their origanal engine had been Japaneese! The first two american trucks I had seen do this were Dodge Dak with 3.9. Both of these were run on dino-juice. One burnt oil like crazy the other did not burn any. Booth owned by two brothers. If ever you have torn down most engines with 100,000 miles on them they have alot of slude and varnish. The gaskets tend to stick together. When you tear an engine that has been run on synthetic oil apart the gaskets almost never stick together and all parts can be cleaned with a damp rag no wire wheels, or putty knifes needed. Synthetics make it easier to extend the life of your vechile. If you abuse your truck synthetics help to lessen the damage you do to it. Mobile one put 1,000,000 on a test car in South Africa. They took turns driveing in shifts for a couple of years and the car never had any engine coponets fail.

Amsoil .
It is also the easiest one to get (UPS brings it to me).

in overall performance (that sold me).

I am working on scanning these articles and posting a

Although the manual says 3000 miles for high stress, and 7500 for normal driving, 7500 sounds like it's a bit on the long side. I typically have mine changed at 4000 miles as I do mostly highway milage. $30 for everything including a wash.

I'm only about 500 miles away from the third oil change since I got my Dak in October.

Nicholas,

AMSOIL products have always been sold through independent dealers (catalog sales) and they have a resale program for retail stores that want to carry their product (on the shelf). Every customer who purchases AMSOIL products does so through an independent dealer...be it catalog or off-the-shelf.

I suggest that if you can't find Amsoil on the shelf you contact me for a free catalog. For $10 you can get a 6 month trial as a preferred customer ($20 for full year) whereby you will recieve up to 25% discount on pricing.

My brother has been an Amsoil Dealer for 8 years and attended many conferences and educational classes. He carrys a Class 5 Tractor Trailor License, and is a graduate of Automotive Mechanics Technical College. I too am a dealer but I haven't been with them for 8 years nor do I have my brothers experience. If I don't have the answer for you ... I'll get the answer from my brother or Amsoil Headquarters. We are here to help ... not just sell product.

Thank You,

www.american-synthetic-oil.com (Dealer #1061837)
Proud Sponsor of www.DodgeDakotas.com website

P.S. AND A VERY IMPORTANT P.S.

Not all Amsoil Motor Oils are extended drain motor oils. Amsoil XL7500 for example has a suggested 7500 mile oil change recommendation.
Make sure you are getting the correct advice.

Thank You,

Steven

ACTUAL MILEAGE VS. ENGINE MILEAGE.

I believe it should be noted somewhere that an engines mileage will be different than the odometer mileage.

Example: I drive my truck 17 miles to my office, and don't drive it on the weekends. 17 miles each way times two times a day = 34 miles per day times 250 work days per year = 8,500 miles per year.

17 miles X 2 trips = 34 X 250 days = 8,500 ODOMETER MILES

However, my "time" on the road is 1 hour each way (bumper to bumper) times two trips per day = 500 hours per year (# of hours engine is running). If I were driving 60 miles per hour for those SAME 500 hours, I would travel 30,000 miles in that same time frame where I am traveling only 8,500 miles in actual distance.

1 hour x 2 trips x 250 days x 60 mph = 30,000 miles

When considering engine protection don't just look at the odometer ... think of the hours and how far you would have traveled.

This is why I believe that using a Premium Synthetic Oil is like buying peace of mind. I like knowing that I can trust the oil in my car to protect my engine whether it shows 8,500 miles on the odometer or 30,000 miles on the clock.

I agree with doctor D. Amsoil is the best.

I use castrol Syntec in all my cars and trucks and never had a problem. I use Amsoil in my Race car were engine heat is a factor and RPM is access of 8000 rpm.

In my opinion truck engines are more abused then a corvette or porsch engine. For one they are hauling around a few tons of weight empty and if loaded up they are really straining the engine.

Tolorances for engines differ but they are all very close. I worked at a company that made engine blocks for mercedies and for gm and dodge. Belive it or not for all the parts we made for all the diffrent companyies dodge tolorances were in the +or- .005 to .001 range and Gm and mercedies were in the +or- .010 to .005

That new 4.7 is a super sofisticated engine that is more sofisticated then the Corvette LS1 which is accually simple in design.

All the new engines built today are built and tested using syntetic oil.

Now that most people are using a good sysntetic oil we will see engines go much futher then ever before.

The diffrence is like shallow well water with to much iron VS. bottled water (being the syntetic.
