Subject: Black Greasy airFilter IP: Logged
Message: I own a 2002 4.7 Litre Automatic 4X4 Sport. Approximately every 3 months, the air/filter/is becoming coated with a black greasy material. The shop that changes my oil, suggested getting the injectors cleaned. Have you/ever/seen this, know the cause, and what the resolution is?
I should also mention that my gas mileage is horrible. 12 mpg. City or/Highway.
TIA

Message: I personally would imagine it to be the vacuum attached to the back of your throttle body. Not sure exactly what the problem may be could be something to do with your PCV valve

Message: That's odd - don't know why he'd think that's related to fuel injectors then. Bad milage could just be related to clogged filter; driving any where its subjected to something that's clogging filter like that ? Any thing blowing oil or grease near the intake ?

Message: This was one of those quick oil change places that I think was trying to up sell me, hence my query here. The air filter is definitly very dirty in a very short time frame. I am going to take it into my regular shop and have them diagnose. I'll post their results. A mechanic I am not. :)

Message: try a new PCV. if it is partially clogged or not working properly it would cause pressure to build up in the engine and the oily blowby has to go somewhere.

Message: The last post is kind of funny... LOL!
Blow by is gases escaping past the piston rings during combustion. That presurises the crank case. The crank case VENT is a rubber tube that plugs into the air intake tube AFTER the filter on the filter box cover. So... some of that gets sucked back into the intake tube. You will see black film on the throttle body and blade. All normal. Of course as said, a messed up PVC valve would make it worse.
