Subject: 440 in my 93 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: Alright guys serious things here. I am strongly looking at the idea of putting a 440 into my Dak. It is a 1993 RC Long bed. Here is what I want to know:
Crate 440? who makes em and how much? What all needs to be done to get it to fit.
Tranny? What tranny to use? How much? What all needs to be done to get it to fit.
If you guys can give me some detailed info about this I would appreciate it. I have done some research already, but would like more references.

Message: Mopar performance makes two 440 based crate motors, thier actually 500ci. One motor makes 505hp/590 ft-lbs. the other makes 575hp/625 ft-lbs., but thier expensive around $8,000 for the one and $8,600 for the other.(WWW.MANCINIRACING.COM)They aslo have a 435hp 402ci 360 based magnum price? There are the 360 magnum crate motors making 380hp/410tq for $3,600. In my Mopar Performance catalog it says they have a 395HP/420tq 360, but can't find anyone that sells it on the web.
INDY CYLINDER HEADS makes crate wedge motors from 426ci(500hp500tq) to 500ci(670hp/640tq) street motors.
If your looking for stock or slightly modified engines(www.dodge-chrysler-auto-truck-engines.com)have longblocks that are low priced and have up grades available on request.

Message: You didn't say if you had a 3.9/5.2 or manual/automatic. If you had a nv3500 you could probably get away with using it. The same oges with the a-518/500. Depending on the mileage on the autos you might need it rebuilt but, I would have a shift kit in it. You would also have to get a different bellhousing and torque converter. If you don't do a lot of highway miles and/or don't really care about mpg I would get a 727 3spd transmission. They are alot stronger than the 4spd autos and a lot cheaper. Jeg's sells TCI street fighter 727 for $750 or a full race competition one for $830. Just to give you an idea of the price difference an A-518 cost about $1600 and a nv3500 is around $1625. If you made a stout 440 around 500+ I would skip the nv3500 and go to at least a nv4500 which cost $2600.

Message: I'm shocked at some of the questions you guys are asking. Your lack of knowledge leads me to think that you don't need to jump on the task of an engine swap. Especially a big block in a dak, however, for a 360 in place of a v6 or 318, cut about 2 1/2 inches out of the oil pan (on the nondraining side)and 90 degree angle it so it clears the cross member, use a V-6 pickup tube, order a B&M flexplate from Jegs for premagnum 360 that way you can use the stock torque convertor although you should step up to a 2000-2500 stall speed but the convertor will not have to be weighted with the B&M flexplate and the engine will still be balanced. The A-500 will work fine but od and lock out will have to be switched manually or use an A904 3 speed. If using a carb. install a fuel pressure regulator as close to the carb as possible set at about 7 psi and install an electric fan. Mine is ac delete so I put it between grill and radiator where the condenser was. I fabbed my motor mouts out of 3 in wide 3/8 in thick steel. Use a 360 harmonic dampner/balancer. Any more questions?

Message: The reason I did not explain the big block swap is it is a very expensive swap and unless you have plenty of money, good engineering skills, plenty of money , and plenty of money, I would not advise it, although it would be an awsome ride, so don't let me deter you if that is what you want to do. Get a Jegs catalog and look at the prices on parts for b/rb engines and some parts are hard to find. A 360 built right in a dak will be fast. Big block dak without slicks and you will literally be spinning your wheels. If you go the 360 route, use an A-500 or an A904 instead of an A-518 or TF 727 the first two have a 2.74 first gear as opposed to the later two's 2.45 (quicker off the line) The A904's hub is crack prone though due to its interlocking design with the shaft. If you use the A-500 you don't have to worry about it. Much better design. Good Luck. E-mail me and maybe I can help you more.

Message: Sounds like you know your stuff shaun.
I dont think the 904 has the 2.74 low first gear, I built a couple of em up in the late 80's and had to buy a 2.74 "low gear set" for them, they were close to $300 back then.
