Subject: What rear axle?

Message:
I am swapping in a 5.7L and I was wondering what rear axle would work best for the HP / TQ in my 03 Dakota QC. Thanks in advance

if your truck originally came with a v8 it would have the same 9 1/4" rearend found in the full size 1/2 ton trucks, and that sucker is pertty stout. if your truck came with the v6 it won't have it, they can be found in junkyards and they bolt in if originally out of a dakota.

i am pretty sure any '00-'04 QC with a v8 came with the 9.25 rear. not the rc's or cc's unless it's an r/t.

ok someone correct me if im wrong but i thought all v8 dakotas came withh the 9.25 rear axle? At least mine does. its a 95 cc sport 318 5 speed 4x4. i no of at least two others around that have the same engine and axle combo and are about four years newer. So do all the v8 dakotas come with this axle or did DC change that after 99?

My '00 RC has the 9.25, so you can't tell by the size of the cab. AWD models usually got the smaller 8.25 since torque is always split between the axles - the rear shouldn't see full engine torque by itself. There may be other exceptions as well.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

A friend has a 2004 or 2005 Durango with the 5.7L V8 and it has the 8.25" rear axle. I don't know if it's 4WD or AWD. I guess if the 8.25" axle is enough for a 5.7L Durango it'll be enough for a Dakota.

What's your left foot doing?
