Subject: 4.7/5.2 hp. and torque IP: Logged
Message: What is the hp and torque for a 2005 4.7 and what is the same for a 99 5.2. Thinking about trading to a newer truck and want to know if I am going down on torque and hp.
Thanks

Message: Peak #'s are similar, but different power bands. 5.2 makes a bit more torque down low; and 4.7 makes more HP up high, and revs higher. With the '05 being heavier, you might want to look for a truck with the lower 3.92 gears.

Message: A pre-'05 Regular Cab weighed 500 pounds less than a '05-up Club Cab. A pre-'05 Club Cab was 150 pounds lighter as well (no extra door structure). The '05-up Quad Cab is only 60 pounds heavier than the previous model, however.

A comment like this would lead people(like myself) into thinking he has a 99 with a 5.2L, and is thinking about purchasing a 2005 with a 4.7L.
As I said before, if it were me, I'd stick with the 99, unless its giving you way too many problems.

But they are not the same model trucks to compare properly. His being a 2000 RC 2WD stripped down RAM.
Mine being a 2003 QC 4X4 Dakota, which actually weighs more. My 4.7 always had more initial snap to it, which is surprising. I think overall they are about the same power. The 4.7 having more RPM's to have fun with though.
Now a NEW Dakota you can get the 4.7 HO option. In that case, you have about the same torque (or close enough) as a 5.9 along with more RPM's as well. The engine used to only be available in the Jeep.

Message: Correction for DD - Gasoline weighs about 7.1 lbs/gallon. Water is 8.3 lbs/gallon. Hence, it floats on water. If it were 10 lbs, as you state, it would sink. Maybe the other three pounds were in the can it was stored in?

Message: I don't have a dyno of a 5.2, but I've dynoed my 4.7, and I'll bet there is alot more area under the curve, and the 4.7 has a much flatter, or steady Torque band also.

Message: you say the 5.2 has been around longer then the 4.7 in the dodges.... yes thats true.... over all the 4.7 performs better then the 5.2.... higher RPM curve... HP i believe is around 240 and torque is around 270 give or take on both numbers.... however the 4.7 came from diamler-benz and whether how long they used that motor or if its new design for mopar im putting my money on that motor.... if seen most benz motors out live the cars by a few hundred thousand miles.... mopar needed an upgrade for the V8 cause the 5.2 is in deed due for a rest.... they have been great motors for years apon years.... just time for something new....

Kowalski. It could have been WORSE!!!
What if people would have assumed it was a Mitsubitchi engine since the new 4.7 design is an OHC and Dodge used them in many FWD vehicles??!!! OMG we'd NEVER live that down!
You know. I own a 2000 4.7 for rebuilding and my 2003 Dak has the 4.7
They changed a few things form 2000 to 2003. Intake and Thottle Body are better. I think the cams are too. While people with a pre 2003 noticed a gain with the HO cam swap, I really didn't. The lobe lift measured the same. I think I'm going to go measure my stock 2003 cams sitting in my attic, to the 2000 cams I have sitting in my garage and see if they didi change the lift. Duration I can't measure.
Anyway. I would not doubt that the 4.7 actually made MORE HP and TQ in the later years than 2000 - 2002 but seeing that Dodge wants to push the HEMI in the performance market they dont bother to change the specs on the 4.7
