Subject: gearing for performance IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 CC 5.2 auto 2wd druck that I want to regear for performance. I have 3.55's now and was wondering how much of a difference does a 4.10 or 4.56 gears make. The truck feels sluggish off the line now. I just want a cheap get up go for now. I will be rebuilding a 408 later for the truck.

Message: What size are your tires? I went from 3.55 to a 4.10 and I got the performance and thanked god for my overdrive. I have 4.10 running a 17" wheel.I run about 2900 rpm in OD at about 65mph. They are great in town and not so great on the highway. Just my opinion though.

Message: That gearing will make a substantial difference in performance; but it is the size of the tires, not the size of the wheel, that will determine rpms at a given speed.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I am running 235\55\17 just to be more clear. there are tools on the net that can help you find out more of what you are looking for.For instance a 235 is about 27 inchs tall I believe.I was looking for a tire that was a little taller than stock.I think the stock size on my truck was like 225\75\15 so that makes it one size taller. But quite a bit wider and of course a bigger wheel.
Sorry Kowalski, I will try to be more clear from now on.

Message: I am going top be running 28" tall tires and most likely stay stock in the engine for now. Doing a complete rebuild in a couple of years.

Message: Woodrow that isn't how tires are measured in metric :)
It is a height to width ratio
so a 265/70 is not the same height as a 265/75 for example. Actually there is about an inch difference.

Message: If you change from 265/70-16 to 265/75-16 and have 3.55 gears, your effective gear ratio changes to 3.44. Put in 4.10 gears and, coupled with the increased tire diameter, will equate to an effective gear ratio of 3.96.
