I'm considering the purchase of a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 v8. I figure that you guys that own these engines can give me the low down on reliability and what to check for thanks in advance.

Or you could go here: http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=51
And ask all the WJ owners what to look out for. You do need to join to be able to post but, it's free.
What year is the JGC? You want to look for a torn CV boot on the front propshaft (driveshaft). If it's torn you can only replace the whole thing ($$$$).
Also if it's a Limited or Overland with the Automatic Zone Control (dual zone AC) you want to look for a broken blend door. Symptoms vary but, the most common are no heat on passenger side, no heat to floor outlets or no heat at all. Make sure you can get all of the different configurations to work, the fix is very expensive.
Surprisingly, the engine has been great. There aren't really any scary things about the engine, DMC has made improvements since the '99 introduction but they were mostly refinements no changes to address any serious issue. Good luck!

Except for the brake rotors, which I replaced with Raybestos units at 30,000 miles, my wife's 2000 Grand Cherokee 4.7L with 5-45RFE and full-time 4WD has been problem free.

There's a wealth of good information at http://www.wjjeeps.com/

HAve had a 4.7 lited 04 Dakota for over 3 years and 48000 miles now. LOVE the motor. Ive had problems with other parts of the truck but the engine is awesome. The idle might seem a little lupmpy and uneven at times, making you think there's a problem. I've noticed it, but heard it's a common thing and not inidicative of serious trouble. I put mobile 1 in every 5000 miles and that's all she seems to need to keep her happy. Wish I could say the same about the girlfriend.

4.7 L care and feeding

1) use quality oil filters (I use Napa Gold or Wix)
2) use a quality oil (synthetic blend or synthetic)
3) use the right weight oil (5w30)
4) change the air filter (I do it every two to three oil changes)
5) Keep the throttle body and sensors clean (seafoam or equivlent, Berryman B12 spray to clean the sensors in the throttle body, some disassembly required)
6) change the sparkplug occassionally (116,000 miles plus and two plug changes)
7) use copper electrode plugs (the pricey platinum, Iridium etc etc only spend your money faster)
8) drive it like a V8

beyond that I'd say enjoy.
