Subject: transmission maybe?

OK I have an 02 dakota 4x4 V8 Magnum. When Going down the interstate it will rev up about 3 or 4 hundred RPM's out of the blue. It does it on flat ground, or going up a hill either one. When I turn the cruise on it gets even worse. IT's mostly intermitent without the cruise but with it it's rev then back down, rev then back down, etc. without the cruise it's about 30 seconds or so and when it does it it'll do it 3 or 4 times in a row. any ideas? Also, this truck should fine for pulling a boat shouldn't it?

The TPS causes symptoms as you describe. Easy to change and costs about $30.

Going down the highway as stated, you should be locked in overdrive there fore not able to rev like that. I think your going in and out of overdrive. Bad connection on trany maybe . I think This is where I would start looking first.

So many problems .... So little time

Hows the power doing in your truck. Does it seem normal. Thinking your cat may be plugged causing the truck to lug down and shift out of overdrive to catch up. Something to try. Drive it with overdrive OFF and see if it still does it. If not then my post is correct. If it does still do it You just may have a serious problem in trany. I kind of doubt it unless you had the trany fluid changed and wrong stuff installed.

has the tranny been serviced lately? have you checked for stored codes? could be the TPS.

you should be fine towing after you fix this little problem.

does it only do this when you are travel above 45mph? it sounds like the Torque converter is going in and out of lock up.

power is fine and yes it does it when the OD is off. The tranny was serviced in either february or march I don't rememeber which. I don't know how to check for stored codes. Yes now that you mention it, it does seem like it's only over 45. Is the torque converter going in and out of lock up bad? It's a very frequent thing once it starts doing it so I don't see how it could be normal, but I am way far from being a mechanic.

is your alternator good? this is quite a long shot, but i had a suburban, and the alternator was bad and was messing sommething up with the computer and would do the same thing.... either give me overdrive, or slip out of it randomly.....i know this is a long shot but the symptoms sound the same as my experience

Going wuth your information, The ovrdrive isn't the problem. You said it was serviced. By whom? They may have put the wrong fluid in it.

02 dakota 4x4 V8 Magnum narrows it to the 4.7 or the 5.9, since Dodge calls all their engines 'magnum'. Knowing which one would help.

Key on off on off on (not to start, just on) will display any stored codes in your odometer window; ending with "pdone". A bad TPS could be causing the torque converter to be going in and out of lock up.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

It's a 4.7. I didn't know they put a 5.9 in a dakota. I'll try to see if there is a code tommorrow night and let you all know what it says.
