Message: Yes, but since the LA273 shares many similarities with the larger bored LA318 & LA360 (pre-magnum), many opt to build those motors to replace a 273 if you are looking for more power versus historical accuracy - since you'll see more of a power gain out of the same mods with a motor of larger displacement. I believe many of the performance parts for those motors are interchangable. Some parts, such as performance pistons, are made specifically for the 273.

Message: If i recall right i do beleive the 273 is an aluminum block engine. i got that off alpar.com so i think it would be worth keeping. they arent bad engines if you want economy. i had one years ago in a 1967 Barracuda s model. it was fun especially with the 4 speed. you can build them up like any other engine. what are you going to use the 273 for? a 318 or the 360 is more commonly used for building like Kowalski said, better results from more cubes.

Message: The 273 is not an aluminum engine. Originally, it was intended to be an aluminum V8 for a DeSoto A-body, but that never materialized.
Mopar actually made a handful (50) modded 273's that included tube headers, .500" lift cam, and holley 700cfm carb...rated at 275 SAE gross HP, or roughly what the SAE net rating is for the 318 Magnum. Keep in mind this was with a 60's era cam and point-type ignition. The 273 has the small valve heads like the 318, but with minimal work, these are great for the smaller V8. You'd probably come out better selling it to a purist looking for a resto-piece and snagging a dirt cheap 318 for your buildup, but maybe you want a 273 just because. You can follow the 318 buildup recipes, but avoid bigger heads. Even a stock, un-modified 360 head would kill low and low-midrange power.
