Subject: Exhaust leak???
IP: Logged

Message:
I was sticking my head in the wheel well the other day to listen for any abnormal sounds coming from the engine. I smelled a strong exhaust smell...went over to the other side and didn't smell anything. My truck backfires at full throttle (has been doing this for years since I installed a new cat back system). Could I have a leak where the manifolds go into the exhaust?

Yup, and that could cause the backfire.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Is there a way I could pinpoint the leak? Would this cause loss of power as well? My truck's getting more and more sluggish ( I've got other issues as well that could cause it to run like dogsh!t )

OK wait. Stop.
How does an exhaust leak after the cayalytic converter cause a backfire condition?
Or did I miss something?

It's pre-cat...right at the exhaust manifold inside the front wheel well.

Then it's likely unrelated to the cat-back install.

Well, until I installed my MBRP system it never backfired. After installing it, while flooring the throttle when it changes gears it sounds like a loud fart...seriously, only way to describe it. I never really bothered to fix it but now, with this exhaust smell in the front wheel well I'm wondering if that's why it has been backfiring for 4 years.

I ditched my third cat and put on a magnaflow dumped after the rear axle. My truck made the same fart sound shifting when i took off the superchips programming. Scared the crap out of me when it happened. Not sure what it is but think it has something to do the retarding of timing during shifts. The superchips does not retard timing when shifting.

Nothing flows like a straight pipe
