Message: It's a 287
But what SHIFT KIT are you ordering? Because if you are ordering a shift kit for the older transmissions it wont work on the ELECTRONIC transmission you have.
The BEST shift kit for you is to go buy a SUPERCHIPS tuner. It removes the torque management and allows this transmission to shift as hard on full throttle as most street shift kits do for older tranny's. PLus it still shifts normally on easy throttle.
The tuner will also give you other advantages as well. Check that out before you order a shift kit that requires removing the pan. And a secret there. The shiftkit available uses a ELCTRICAL splice trick to remove the torque management. Which requires cutting and soldering inside the tranny. You do NOT need to do that with a superchips.
Go find my video of my tranny barking the tires and you will know what a superchips can do.

Message: DO you have to run 91 if you install any program...or are there different programs to use 87 or 85. I looked at the dyno chart and it was pretty impressive, something like 22 HP max and 7HP peak gain which is pretty good considering that you have to drop mad $$ for any REAL HP gains. I think ill be purchasing one

Message: There are three choices that I know of for an 01 shift upgrade (45rfe).
1) Cut the TCM wire yourself
2) Superchips tuner
3) Tranny shift kit
I've done all of these. I did 1) myself several years ago, quick and easy.
I also have the SC tuner ($300), but since I clipped the TCM wire, I don't know exactly what the SC did for the shifting by itself.
I then put the 45rfe shift kit in ($100). Not difficult, just messy. The wiring mod that Graphite mentioned is done on the wiring connector _outside_ of the tranny (you solder a resistor between two of the connections on the connector). I did not do this myself due to the TCM wire clip. This kit was a good upgrade, firmed up the shifts.

Message: here is how you cut the TCM wire. Go under your hood. next to the passenger side headlight there is a black box. remove the cover. take off some of the wire wrap if needed. find the yellow wire with the green stripe going through it. cut the bitch, your done, or do what most including myself do and run it to a switch in the cab so you can turn it on and off. No it will not hurt anything, no you will not through a code, no the trans will not overheat, yes it will make a noticable difference in shifting, especially from 1st to 2nd.

Message: Whoa wait a sec.
You can ONLY cut that wire on the trucks with the SEPERATE Transmission Control Module.
When I first got my Dak, (TCM is integral with the PCM on approx 2003 and up) cutting that wire caused a fault and tranny went into LIMP MODE which is only 2nd and 3rd gear!
