Message: I am the owner of a '98 dakota 5.2l, and I am looking to buy a travel trailer in the 18-20' range. I have never owned a trailer of any type. My truck has a reese hitch, is in sound condition and runs well! Do I have the capability to haul an electric brake trailer 100-500 miles?

Message: How is your truck setup? Which rear end, trailer weight, etc. You'll need a trailer brake controller too. YOur probably good for 5500 lbs with a 3.55 rear and up to 6500 lbs with a 3.92 without pushing it.

Message: That size camper will probably weigh around 4000 # unloaded. Is your hitch bumper mounted, or frame mounted ? Bumper mounted would be too weak. Make sure you load with some tongue weight - newbies often load the weight neutraly so as not to weigh down the back of the truck - that would be a mistake, and cause very bad handling.

Message: Oh man speaking of where you place the weight, few years back I had to load an '80 Camaro on the trailer backwards due to it's position. That about near killed me with the weight of the engine on the back of the trailer. I was aware it would be an issue and planed to keep it under 50 but since it was acting ok I thougt about pushing it to 60 and that's when the hair-raising started! As the truck started swaying back and forth you could hear the rear wheels chirping kinda like an airplane landing as they left the road and came back down again.
