Message: I have seen them for about 800 bucks and up.. I think it would give you better overall braking. Look at sports cars and now even larger trucks. They have rear disc,so that has to say something. You also have to look at what you do with your truck. Do you pull a trailer or haul heavy loads,do you really need rear disc or do you just want them. Is your truck a 4x4 or 2x4? In water or mud you don't have to worry about the rear brakes getting water in the drums and not working right. With disc that braking power is almost always there.
I have a 2wd dak and if I have the extra cash and was done with all the other stuff I wanted to do to it, I would put rear disc on it. Overall, I think at a performance type upgrade it would be a good one for your brakes. As far as normal use your drum brakes are fine. You also have to remember that if you need parts, you most likly won't be able to goto Autozone or even Napa to get those parts. You would have to goto the manufacture to get them. Well in whatever your choice, goodluck.

Message: I have a brand new rear disc brake conversion kit from SSBC Stainless Steel Brake Corp. incl
stainless brake lines. Kit costs $895.00. Can see
on their website. If anyone interested make me a REASONABLE offer not $500 or $600.
The Box has never been opened. I purchased another truck before I had a chance to install.
A friend of mine has the same kit and they will
make a tremendous difference in your stopping.

Message: Thanks for the input Woodrow, I'm autocrossing the truck next year starting in April. I need the extra braking power as long as it really works. I don't want to spend money on stuff that won't help. I have a 99 4x4 with a 5.2--- I'm hoping there are alot of rainy days for racin so I can plug in the front axle and show the high dollar import guys just what a truck can really do! If anyone has more info to help feel free to let me know. I'll keep you all posted on how the truck does.

Message: I'v not done this to my truck. But here's some info that might help.
As a general rule, disc do not outperform drums in routine street driving. Given proper adjustment, yada yada yada. They tend to dry out a lot quicker when you drive through a puddle; that's a plus.
Where the really shine is on the track (or autocross) is two specific areas that can really shave seconds off your time. First, they don't fade like drums do. They are more consistant lap after lap, corner after corner. Especially if you provide good ducting for consistant cooling (not that important in autocross).
Second, is tunability. By changing pads, you can really adjust the overall brake performance and balance. On the street I put Hawk HPS front and rear on my roadster. But when I go to the track I want more agressive brakes, with a little more brake bias. So I switch to Hawk HP+ in the front, and Porterfield R4 in the back.
If you want to be competative, this should be near the top of your list.

Message: Thanks bob, I know disc is a better way of braking and that's what I need. I just want to make sure that the convert kits really work. Like I said I don't want to spend money on stuff that won't help. From what you guys say I'll go for it. What the hell it's only money, besides I can't wait to see the look on the BMW and AUDI guys face when I turnout faster times. V8 power and low gears should stomp those guys flat.----I HOPE.

Message: I've got a SSBC rear disc conversion on my '01 RC. I was surprised at the improved positive feel of the brakes in everyday driving. A "budget" alternative would be to find any 2003 Dak setup from a boneyard. Rear disc brakes were standard in 2003.
