Subject: 4.7 Engine Questions IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 4x4 Dak Extended 4.7 hooked to an automatic. I bought the truck used, whoever owned it before didnt take care of it, the oil was nasty and they used sludger state, timing chain went out of it and they didnt get the cam in time and i had to put a tranny in it also. I cant complain coz i love the truck and the price i paid for it but its pushing 130K and its using oil and im gonna rebuild it this summer. I was wondering if anyone sells an overhaul kit for 4.7?
I have Gibson Duals, K&N air intake, and superchips power programmer 2. I have two problems, the engine runs at 210 almost always, i went down to advance and tryed to get them to look up a set of plugs that are 2 heat ranges cooler and they said they dont make them i was wondering if anyone knew any part numbers along with a cool termostat info?

Message: Well the cooler plugs don't make the coolant temp run cooler.
Cooler plugs just mean the tip runs cooler, actually gets cooled MORE by the coolant being closer to the head, water jacket or soemthing.
Cooler plugs are just to reduce tip temp to not pre detonate on high compression engines. Go too cool and the tips will not burn off the deposits as well...
As for rebuld kits. It is hit and miss. Many parts are dealer only.
I am rebuilding an EXTRA 4.7 for my car. I lucked out and found some NEW unopened mopar gasket sets on ebay.
Search around for what you can get from aftermarket companies, then go to the dealer for what only they sell!
It is a fairly easy engine to rebuild EXCEPT for that 3 piece timing set. Good luck :)

Message: If you are planning on paying someone to rebuild the engine, I would recommend you go to a Dodge dealership and get a quote on a total engine replacement. The difference between the parts cost, might be countered by the labor charges.
I'm sure all the necessary parts can be bought from a mopar dealer if you are prepared to do the work yourself.
I would love to see some pictures of the overhaul if you do get to do it. So by all means post em when you take em, cause this board would eat that stuff up.
