Subject: Tail gate.....up or down? IP: Logged
Message: Everyone,
Here is an excellent and I mean excellent article on driving with the tailgate up or down on different pickups. It goes into all the mathematical calculations, shows wind tunnel simulations using visible trail marking smoke. It also show a chart with the coeffient of drap for tailgate up, down, off and using a tonneau cover. You will need Adobe Acrobe to read the article. The reader is free to down load. In this day of ever increasing gas prices, this article could help to be a real fuel saver. If you can't read it now download the file and read it offline. PLEASE READ IT IT COULD SAVE YOU MONEY AND POSSIBLY PREVENT AN ACCIDENT.

Message: Every test ever publicized on this subject proves that you're better off with the tailgate up.
However, somebody will pipe up right here on this board. They will go on to explain how the laws of physics and aerodynamics don't apply to their truck. Watch, it's going to happen soon.

Message: Just put a tonneau cover on it and be done with it. No controversy with this solution...

Message: Not quite what .boB was looking for, but...
Using a scangauge (http://www.scangauge.com/), and after several highway trips to central California from the Seattle area, I found I get better mileage with the tailgate down, but only at about 50MPH or less. Above that, the tailgate up gets me better mileage. I have a bed box in my '04 ex cab. Maybe that's why.

Message: Doesn't take a genius to know that a truck pushes a huge bubble of compressed air in front of it. Ever pass a semi and get blown to the side as you clear the cab? Nice to have wind-tunnel comfirmation, but drag can't be much different with low pressure air covering the back of the truck, tailgate up or down.
Personally, I'd rather have anyone who rearends me impale their radiator on my hitch receiver before busting up my tailgate...
