Message: It sounds like you got marbles bouncing around in the cylenders. The worse the ping the more marbles in there. You can't miss it. Long as your engine is sound, there should be no pinging/knocking at all going on. Just go with your ears. you here this, first try a higher octain. if that corrects it or makes things better your on the right track. One thing for sure. You let pinging continue sooner or later your going to bust a piston an that can make a mess of the cylender bore to boot if luck is against you.

Message: in the owners manual it says that when running 87 octane, small detonation will occur and is normal with out hurting the engine.
