Subject: Google Ad Killer IP: Logged
Message: Found this on the General Board, try it, it worked for me. Tryed this on a laptop using Windows XP.
Put two lines to your HOSTS file and you'll never see Google ads again on this board, or any other, for that matter.
Here's how:
1. COPY these two lines to your clipboard
127.0.0.1 pagead.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com #[Google AdWords]
2. Close your browser.
3. Go find your HOSTS file and open it with the text editor of your choice, but Notepad won't screw it up, and DO NOT use MSWord: it WILL screw it up.
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98/ME = C:\WINDOWS
4. Go to the very bottom of the file and paste those two lines to the end.
5. Save the file (DO NOT "save as", that would put a file suffix on it, rendering the whole file useless, and that's not what you want).
6. Close the text editor.
7. Open your browser and come on back.
Here's why it works:

Isn't technology wonderful.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: Excellent post. The adds irritate me to no end. I had never contemplated that approach, but after seeing it, I am sure it will work after reviewing the page source and realizing the gosh darn things originate from pagead.googlesyndication.com.
Only question I have is, what if i run a web server on localhost (127.0.0.1) and is actively listening on that port ! ! ! :)

Message: Got it to work with XP but couldn't find the right folder in W98. The only one I found was hosts.smp or something like that and it wouldn't work.

Message: If you use Firefox, as I do, you can download the Adblock extension. Once installed, just right click on offending ad and select adblock. Works with most ads not just google. And if you use a wildcard(*) you can block all ads from a given sight.
Later,
KC
PS another great extension is VideoDownloader. Allows you to download and save streaming videos from youtube, google video, etc.
