Message: I recently pick up a 99 dakota 5.2L 81,000, ran well first 2 weeks, now it starts nice about 1-2 minutes after start up, starts idling real rough has stalled a few times. Feather the throttle a little bit, it clears up and seems to be fine. If i don't let it get past the hiccup it has once i get on the road if i hold throttle steady it almost cuts out completley, if I Floor it I can hear a popping noise from intake & it bucks BAD, again once it's past the hickup seems ok. Please Help!
Thanks

Message: I have a 99 5.2 and almost the same things happened to mine. First time it was the bucking problem. I replaced the TPS it cost 56.00 and all was well for 2 months. After that the stalling trouble started. Most of the time just after I started the truck or when I try to put it in gear. I replaced the IAC valve and haven't had any trouble with it since. Get an OHM meter and check both sensors---the Haynes manual will give you the how too's on doing this. Good Luck.

Message: My god Tony....I have had the EXACT same problem for the past 35,000 miles. Was never able to explain it properly. Unfortunately I have not found the problem.
Here's a list of all the crap I have replaced (at least once)
IAC
IAT
TPS
MAP Sensor
Fuel Pump in the gas tank
Spark Plugs (several brands)
Distributor Cap and Rotor
Plug Wires (several brands)
Both Oxygen Sensors
Fuel Injectors
Can't think of the rest.
I have a 99 5.2 with a manual.
The only thing left that is a common problem is the timing chain, plenum gasket. Possibly replace the coil. I will be watching this thread hopefully you will find some resolution and let us know.

i have read up alot about my problem but can seem to
pin point. Are you consuming alot of oil, i am & if so that
is a sign of intake plenum gasket. Please let me know.
Some one told me that it might be a lobe on the
camshaft, another friend told me impossible,,,who
knows, i'll keep in touch here

Message: Hey Tony, sorry the trucks giving you such a hard time. When I trouble shoot problems with my truck, I always start with the easy stuff first. You might want to try doin a few more tests before you really start taking stuff apart. Do a VACUME TEST first, that should narrow down the trouble if you get a bad reading. If so then do a COMPRESSION TEST to narrow it down even more. Good Luck.

Message: Tony -
I have watched for oil consumption and also look down the throttle body from time to time to look for oil...everything is the way it should be in those aspects. I have not done any compression or vaccumm checks. I don't have either of the proper gauges to do so.
I too was thinking the plenum gasket though. Seems to be a very common problem. Mine is still the stocker. I am now at approx 130,000 miles. Still the original timing chain also. In your case, since you know you are passing a lot of oil, check down your throttle body and check to see if there is a build up down there. You should probably look into getting that fixed.

Message: I have all the tools nesessary to do the work just hate to do all that and have NO REMEDY! Plus I'd hate to shell out all that money into it. It's a nice truck but only $1,500 with 81K guess it might be worth it. Thanks for replies

Message: Tony -
you are in luck. If you can do the work yourself, the parts are pretty cheap. My issues is not getting the parts, but paying 4-6 times the cost of parts for the labor.
The timing chain is only $100 for a much better one.
The plenum gasket isn't more than $70 at the dealer. The M1 manifold is about $450, I will stick to the new gasket. Plus the M1 isn't CA smog legal becuase it doesn't have the necessary EPA stamp.
Good Luck

Message: First check to see if you have any kind of vaccum leaks. This is a main issue with more mile vehicles. Also check the charge of your battery, and the output voltage of you alternator. Doesnt sound relivant but it is.
