Subject: tranny question IP: Logged
Message: have a 2000 4.7 4*4 auto 3.55 gears, aftermarket tranny cooler. dose dakotas come with one type of tranny? or is there a heavier one in the dakota sport models with the higher gear ratio? reason i am asking this question is that i am towing a travel trailer. weighing 4500 wet weight. "on the high side" when towing i take it easy, no rush. it will run a little warm on 2 mile climbs 235'. then on the flats and small hills 210'. drive with OD off. ps tranny fluid was changed this summer, have towed 6 times now fluid is still red no smell of it being burned.

Message: Same as my truck - all '00 4.7 auto have the 45RFE. Many of us tow with the OD on with no problems with that transmission - I wouldn't recomend it for the others. Probably time to flush your cooling system. I tow 1000 more with no problems - although this year, waiting in line on a hill to park at the races, the temp was starting to creep up unless I put it in neutral while sitting. I flog it like a bitch, not going to let my friends with v10's or diesels out pull me - and my fluid looks great too. Just a sign our cooling systems are getting a little older...
