Subject: Header Fitment Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 99 4X4 (it's a beater upper) and the OE exhaust is about to come out. Will the older style headers from like the 80's model flowtechs work on my existing 318? Can't justify the expense of the shortys for this application. If the spacing of the heads are the same with relation to the bolt pattern and exhaust port location, the older style headers would work??? YEH OR NEH
if no WHY??? THANKS

They should bolt up, but WHY?? The magnum exhaust manifolds outflow the older LA318 manifolds. If you want more HP and less torque than stock, get a set of stock '92-93 Dakota 318 manifolds (and change your Y pipe to fit the larger diameter). Otherwise, go for a set of Mopar Performance headers...

The Why?? is... Headers for a 1987 Dodge PU with 318 are like 105 bucks as opposed to JBA's for my application which are significantly more (450 or so). So i could 86 my OEM manifolds and by the older headers and they would work??? If this is the case why have more people not done the same thing???

I see your point. The problem with those headers to your '99 most likely will be steering clearance issues (it'll hit the steering box). Smog issues too, as most people want to stay close to smog legal.

I sell positive performance headers (have them on my '99 4x4 Dakota 5.2L-- as Tony the Tiger would say "They'reeeee GREAT") I have a group buy through this Friday ($400+ shipping), it includes the Y pipe and all (unlike JBA).

taking a better look at it I think I see what you mean by hitting the steering assembly. Ill see if I can get the WAR DEPARTMENT (wife) to approve it and I might try to get in on that group buy.

Thanks for the info

Hey rtdkota, maybe you can answer this.
Im thinking of puting magmun exh manifolds on
a car ('80 F body with 318) because I dont want headers. Now there was a magazine article awhile back that had a chart with all the factory mainfiolds showing folw rates & model/year applications, and part numbers. I lost it.
What I fear is buying them & finding they done fit. I've seen pictures & they seem to be close to
the firewall of a car. Now Im finding there are different variations. And differences between;
5.2 & 5.9
Dak & Ram
Before 92 & after 92
Shelby Dak & std 5.2 Dak
The combinations are multiplying?
Does anyone know which yr/model application is
best for retrofits into LA engine car bodys?
