My V8 dakota has 133,000 miles and when I first crank it up, the lifters make a clicking noist until the engine warms up. Any suggestions on a oil that would help or do the lifters need replacing?

My '92 does the same. I've been told it is normal. It's been doing it for about 50k miles and nothing bad has happened. Had motor rebuilt and the builder said everything looked normal for a 130,000 mile engine. I wouldn't worry too much.

It's caused by oil draining down off the valve train when the engine sits. Takes time for it to get back up there. I used to have a small block Ford that did the same thing. I used a can of Slick-50, and that fixed it. If you read their sales ad, that's what they claim it does, slows oil drain back. And that's all it does.

So .boB if we just let it go without adding the slick 50 what will happen down the road, will the ticking get louder? or last longer? or will nothing different happen.

my o4 dakota q/c has 40.000 miles on it. It was making a loud tapping noise, andwould go away after it warmed up.it started to get worse,so I looked around the passenger side valve cover, and felt around the factory headers.I had a leak. to confirm it I took it to the dealership. they told me that both exhaust manifolds were warped, and needed to be replaced.I did not hear if this was a widespread problem, but make sure you dont have any exhaust leaks, because when i looked for it it was tough to find.and it sounded exactly like a bad lifter.anyone have this problem?or heard of it?
