It means that the PCM's internal error detection circuitry found an error in your internal memory. Most likely your memory has a flakey chip so data stored in that location is unreliable. All modern computer equipment has a procedure for detecting whether or not the data within the system is correct or not. The most common is parity checking (odd or even) or using adders to determine the number of ones there are in the binary data at any point on a data bus plus the parity bit. If you're supposed to have odd parity and the circuitry determines that at a parity checkpoint (exiting memory for example) the number of ones plus the parity bit equals an even number, you would have a memory parity error.
Try resetting your PCM by removing one of your battery cables and turning your ignition key to the 'start' position for about 30 seconds. Then reconnect your cable and start the engine and let it idle for a couple of minutes then drive normally to allow your PCM to relearn your parameters.
If that doesn't clear the DTC, try removing your battery cable, unplugging the connectors to the PCM and spraying them with electrical parts cleaner and reseating them.
If you still have the DTC, you probably need to replace your PCM. Good luck!

The PCM is located on the passenger side front fenderwell under the hood right behind the air cleaner box. I would disconnect and reconnect the PCM itself. (3 or 4 connectors depending upon which style) Maybe one of the pins isn't making a perfect connection. This resets the PCM also.

My 01 Dakota is also experiencing a P0601 error. It comes and goes. There are two computers under my hood one on the passenger side fender with 3 plugs in it and one on the front passenger side radiator support with one big plug. Do I unplug them both and clean them with electrical parts cleaner?

gabe, your PCM is covered by the 8yr/80000 miles emissions equipment warranty. So, if you have less than 80K miles, take your truck to a dealer. Look in the owner's manual under warranty information so you can show it to them if they give you any trouble.

my truck has 108000 miles on it so I will unplug and shoot some electrical cleaner on it. I did find a company in Jacksonville, FL that totally rebuilds computers and gives a lifetime warranty. They also said the the Dodge Dakota computer is their number one rebuild item, so it seems that Dodge needs to do something.

the cruise control will work some of the time and then won't work. Have checked all the fuses and check to ensure grounds are grounded with a meter. Today the heater/a/c switch decide to only work on high, again things seem to going south on the electrical side. Not sure just were to go and try and solve the problem. Maybe the computer is acting up that is creating this problem
