Message: 2 days ago my Engine light came on. My question is, is this one of those "dealer scams"? What I mean is, I had a Jeep before and at certain KM's the light would come on, you take it to a dealer they hook it up to the computer, it resets and they charge you. My truck just hit 120K, its running and driving fine, fresh oilds, clean filter etc. Its a 2000 4.7 auto 4x2. Could it be a sensor?

Message: gas cap on tight? usually 3 clicks will tell you it's on tight. I think it may take 2 or so gas tanks to reset itself!

Message: Don't go to the dealer. Go to Advance or AutoZone. Either will read the codes for you for free. Once the problem is fixed, the light will go out. My guess is that it's an O2 sensor. Mine is out now (01 4.7). Sucker costs 142.00. Truck stills runs fine, so I'm in no hurry to fix it.

I found this thread on the subject of this code.
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/dea/263.html
It seems to be the gas cap, but mine is new and screwed on fine. THere is also a reference in this thread to "reset the computer" ... is this something I can do myself or does a dealer have to do it. Thanks very much!! Its good to know its not critical.

Message: you can reset the PCM yourself.
2 ways.
1) Disconnect the battery, turn key to start for approx. 30 seconds.
or
2) standing over the pass side fender, disconnect the connector nearest the firewall from the PCM for about a minute or two. (this way you don't have to worry about reseting radio presets or the clock).
pull the gas cap off and look in the center to check for rust. sometimes they rust in there and leak.

Message: I just got back from Part Source, I picked up a new gas cap any way for the hell of it just so I knew for sure, it was only 7.95 so what the hell. Put it on and the light was still on. I'll try 2 options listed by 'daddio'. Thanks again, I'm fiding this a very resourceful message board!!

Message: It also depends on what year your truck is if that little trick will work or not. Not sure exactly what year(s) it doesn't work.

Message: I happened to remember the key trick the other day and tried it. Nothing but mileage. Then I remembered I don't have anything wrong. Guess I'll have to wait to see if it works with the 98 model.

Message: Clint - That's why then - trick is for '00 up; and on some older trucks it will trigger a sequence of flashing lights - but not for your '99.

Message: i had the same thing. figured it was my gas cap. couldnt get it to go off, kept going to auto zone and they kept turning it off but it kept commin back on, but kept reading the code that my gas cap wasnt tight. even bought a new one and it kept commin on. turns out if you crawl under your truck from the drivers side, on my evac pump i had a hose off. all the times i was under there i kept overlooking it, and its right there infront of you. i guess it was off the truck when i bought it and the dealer just reset the light. i just reconnected the hose and it hasnt been on since
