Subject: synthetic oils? IP: Logged
Message: will useing synthetic oils help in reduceing friction, which causes heat, lower the engine temp some few degrees. caused by friction, while towing a travel trailer. right now i use name brand oil,"not synthetic" with napa gold filter. "i hope iam makeing some kind of sence" with this post.
p.s towed this weekend engine temp was around 220' small hills and got to 235' on a steep climb. and strait aways was at or below 210'. a/c was off, OD was off, have after market trans cooler. only have 4.7 with 3.55 gears. and outside temp was at 90' or so.

Message:
IN A NUTSHELL - The components in Synthetic Oils (or lubricants) are chemically reacted to produce finished products with pre-designed performance characteristics. The benefits are reduced wear, more horsepower, lower operating temperatures, and improved fuel mileage.
Synthetic Motor Oils are made from pure chemicals with molecular uniformity - usually natural gas - and not like conventional motor oils which are made from refined crude oil.
Because of synthetic lubricants molecular uniformity, they excel in reducing friction, which improves fuel efficiency, controls heat and reduces wear. This molecular uniformity also helps synthetics resist thinning in hot temperatures and thickening in cold.
TWO PRIMARY DIFFERENCES
- CONVENTIONAL LUBRICANTS vs. SYNTHETIC LUBRICANTS -
There are two (2) primary differences between synthetic oils and conventional petroleum ("dino") oils. These are the base stock or liquid that makes up the volume of the oil, and the additive package. These additives are NOT to be confused with over the counter after market additives. These additives, which are in all oils, enhance the wear resistance properties of the oil, enhance the ability of the oil to neutralize acids and combustion by products, and provide corrosion protection for the engine’s internal surfaces.
SPECIAL NOTE
The quality of the base oil and the amount and quality of additives (the "additive package") vary from one oil brand to another and this is a very significant factor in the ability of an oil to adequately protect your engine in all driving conditions.

Message: Those temps sound kinda high.
Yesterday I towed a car/trailer up from Pueblo. Uphill most of the way. Outside temp was 94* (it had cooled off some). My water temp gauge stayed below the middle. Don't have an oil or trans temp gauge. I have the 5.9 with HD trailer tow package, and 3.92 gears. I have an open element air cleaner, Hypertech tuner, 180* thermostat, and Water Wetter. Truck is otherwise stock with 80K miles. I travel mostly at 75-80 mph, with the A/C on and OD on most of the time.
I use Mobile 1 10W-30, a Purolater Pure 1 filter, and change both every 5K miles.
