Subject: New Engine Computer Backfire IP: Logged
Message: Yesterday I replaced the Engine Control Computer on my 92 5.2L Auto and since then the truck backfires at around 2000RPM when driving (not if in park or neutral). Is this normal for a new computer? Do I just need to let it run so the computer can dial itself in or did I get a defective computer? Truck did not backfire with old computer but old computer had intermittent short that would make the truck die.

Message: Most likely, it needs to be "Flashed." New program downloaded by the dealer, and a very few shops.
Call and ask the dealer parts guy.

Message: That isn't true, Gen 1 dakotas dont need this (Gen 2's do). I have confirmed that with the local Dodge Dealer. I got another engine controller and problem persists so now I'm wondering if I had a coincidental failure of another part at around the same time that I changed out the computer.

Message: Trace the power supply harness for the coil, it snakes down from beside the number two injector behind the serpentine brackets down to the coil. Also check the connector at the coil. A short or bad connection will result in misfires, dying, exc.
