Subject: 2000 4.7L overheating

I have just replaced the thermostat on my dakota, and I'm still overheating....Looks like my fan on my radiator isn't working, but not sure where to locate the fuse to start the process of checking it. Any other suggestions on what else I could check too?

I also forgot to ask...how can you tell if your coolant is flowing properly? When I started my truck with the radiator cap off, I didn't notice any movement in the coolant....should I have???

It will not flow until the t-stat opens up which will not happen until it warms up a bit.

I went thru the flushing and changing t-stat etc. etc.

Nothing would show a temp drop, the gauge would read high. One day after 4-wheeling (moderate dersert back roads) I stopped and popped the hood, the radiator and tranny cooler were hot yet the top metal on the radiator was cool.

That did it, I changed the radiator and I'm back to running normal engine temps.

My truck is an 2001 4X4 with the 4.7L.

These radiators seem to clog up easy, even when using the DI or distilled water.

A new radiator may be your answer.

UUUGGGHHH!!!!Let's hope...NOT!!! But I will definately give it a look...good suggestion on how to check the radiator, would have never thought of that. I tried to check by feeling the back of the radiator for cool spots, but the two fans were in the way, and I could only touch small parts of it...thanks for your time.

You might have to bite the bullet and have a shop flush out the cooling system to remove all the nasty bits that are inside.

It took me about two hours too change the radiator. Now that I've done it once that time could be cut down to about 1 1/4 hours.

I could not see paying someone massive $$ to do it.

I got an OEM replacement radiator from radiator.com for a little over $200.

It is a messy job but not terribly hard to do.

Are you sure you have all the air out of the system? It took me a couple trys to get all the air out, using the bleeder screw on the upper hose (in the metal part attached to the engine) To allow the air to escape.. It seems to work better with the system up to temp, the radiator cap on and engine running..
