The computer said 17.5 MPG. I calculated 18.9MPG. All Highway Driving. I changed sparkplugs and plug wires and put a K&N filter on the truck before the trip. So I thought it should get better than 18.9 MPG. Could it be the cat converter or a sensor somewhere on the engine?

Dude...that's not bad mileage really...it's about average. Some get a lil more than that...some get a lil less.

I have a '00 3.9L 5sp 2wd with a 3.51 Diff (geared for cruising) and I get 20mpg mixed, 17-19 around town, 21-25(once) all freeway. I calculate the numbers by hand by my trip meeter and toping off my tank. I don't have any sensor to tell me what I am getting.

I get better gas mileage when I drive under 60 or so. When I cruise all day @ 70+mph then I end up getting 21mpg.

My truck is bone stock. Air filters are paper FRAM stuff. I did up the size of my tires slightly (just over stock, I think they are 225/75 15's now)...giving me an even taller gearing.

I think you are actually getting great gas mileage. The window sticker on my 03 reg cab 5 speed said 14-19 MPG. I usually get about 17-18 on all highway driving. I also have the tire and handling group that came with the truck. It sits on 265/70/16's. I think this probably hurts my mileage. So if you are getting about 17.5, I would say thats pretty good. Certainly there are other things you can do to improve your mileage. Just do a little research on this site and Im sure you can find enough gas saving mods.

The computer takes into account all driving. City and highway. Slow acceleration and fast too.

I get ~16-17 in the city. ~19-21 on the highway @ 70MPH. Before the speed limit went up, @60 I averaged up to ~26~28 with the tailgate down. Now I just use a tonneau cover.

my computer has said 18 mpg for the entire 145000 miles that I have driven my truck. When it was stock I got about 17 in town and 21 on the highway. I am now getting 19 city and 23.3 Highway with the best mileage 26.1 for an all freeway trip. The electric fan seemed to be the one mod that helped mileage them most. What i have spent on mods would buy a lot of gas but is sure was fun.

I figured 18.9MPG on paper. That was a 1700 KPH trip. 80% of that was highway. I haven't yet check city driving on paper. The comp said 13.5 Average. How much differance would taking the Cat. off? And I to have a homebrew K&N.

removing the cat will not help your fuel mileage and it is illegal. you can improve mileage by adding a tonneau cover, electric fan, cold air intake, doing the cps mod, low restriction muffler (dynomax or flowmaster)and keeping your stock tailpipe. tps mod may or may not help mileage, good plugs, dist cap with brass inscerts, low restriction wires(taylor, msd etc.)these are low cost changes it you want to spend some money just search this board for mods.

So you're not in the U.S., then, since it's a federal crime here.

mxjamie... these guys figuring mileage with the computer have the digital computer in the overhead console. It just gives em the readout of information...trip, temperature, direction they're traveling, gas mileage, etc.

CPS mod has to do with modifying the crankshaft position sensor... I just recently did this and have definitely noticed a bit more pickup.
http://www.krcperformance.com/newcontent/timing.html

TPS mod has to do with tweaking the voltage your throttle position sensor reads.
