Subject: 92' Trans temp sensor? IP: Logged
Message: I own a 92 Dakota Sport 2WD with the automatic transmission and I'm having the same cold shifting difficulty between 2nd and 3rd. Shifts fine after it warms up. I have been reading about the transmission temperature sensor possibly being the culprit behind this, but have no idea where to find it on my truck. Does anyone have a diagram that shows where it is and what it looks like on the 1992 models??
Thanks in advance!

Message: It may not be on the '92s. My 92 Dak 3.9L V-6 4-spd auto 4WD doesn't have one. But if you do, look near the end of the transmission cooler lines near the radiator, left front of the vehicle, for an in-line sensor with an electrical connection to it.
Have you changed fluid and filter, and adjusted bands, within the last 37K miles?

Message: I have no idea if the fluids and filter was changed in the tranny or if the bands have been adjusted. I just bought it used about 3 weeks ago. When I first got it, I started to get the fluid changed, but the quik lube guy talked me out of it for fear that I'd lose my tranny altogether.

Message: Don't bring your truck back to those guys. If you change your fluid, and have the band adjusted at the same time you're fine.
Be carefull. Most garages do NOT adjust bands anymore. It's not included in a transmission service any more, it's a specific request that needs to be made at the same time.

Message: I too have been having difficulties with cold shifting on my 92 Dakota. We had a re-built transmission put in Dec 08 and have had one issue after another with runnng decent, wouldn't idol, ran rough...ect and now shifting. The mechanic at the time bragged about replacing a 95 temp sending unit with the "correct" 92 model. Anyone know of a reason that it would have been a 95 in it? and would replacing it help the issues of shifting and a seeming lack of power?

Message: The 92 does not have a temperature sensor for the transmission fluid. The 95 had it built into one of the cooling lines for the transmission. So he did not change out any temp sensor for your transmission. The 92 uses input from the coolant temp sensor on the intake manifold to decide when to allow overdrive and lockup. On the 92, overdrive is allowed to engage when coolant temp is greater than 60F; lockup is allowed above 140F. No other shifts are affected by temp sensors.
Check fault codes to see if you have a bad thermostat (code 17).
