Subject: 94 3.9 Fuel Problems IP: Logged
Message: I have 94 3.9 Dakota. I replaced the fuel pump 6 months ago with a universal pump. It hasn't run good since. Now the truck runs horribly. I put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel log where there is a plug. It pegged the gauge at 100psi. I know this is high so i was wondering if you have to use a Dodge fuel pump. I was also wondering why there isn't a return to the tank. The truck idles high, and runs very inconsistant. It stalls constantly. It puffs black smoke too. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Message: your right thats way high-around 45psi is the pressure
there should be a return to the tank, this will cause high pressure, the return will run with the pressure line from the tank, make sure the return has,nt been pinched off

A 1994 didnt have a return, the regulator was on the tank.. The stock fuel pressure should be around 41 +-5psi Pull the bed and check the regulator, you screwed it upsome how on the universal pump install. I personally would of bought a direct replacement one. Or even a whole new sending unit depending on the millage.
