Message: Check some on your own....call the dealership, or go to a trailer lot and look thru their books.
I have a 2000 Dakota 3.9L 5sp 2wd and no towing package (diff is gear high like a 2.5:1 or something) and it is rated at 2500lbs I beleive for towing.
That is half of other reports. With a lower geared diff the amount can increase to 5,000lbs. It is best if you verify what running gear you have and look it up.

Message: Correction my '00 Dakota 3.9L 5sp has a 3.21:1 rear end according to my sticker in my glove box.
I don't know where I got the 2.5ish number but the one trailer place that "looked it up" said it was around 2,500lbs trailer GVWR.
What does the GVWR number on the trucks door jam mean? Trucks GVWR? Or what it can tow?

Message: If I remember correctly, that's the trucks Gross Vehicle Weight (not including towing). More or less, your truck and payload capacity.
There's another one on there, think GCWR? Could be wrong on the intials, but it's the Gross Combined Weight, meaning truck, payload and trailer

Message: acorrding to Ma Mopar the 97's which are virtually identical to the 98's towing capacity for for a 98 dak club cab w/ a 3.9 5 spd and I am assuming since you did not list it that is is NOT a 4X4 is 3,600 lbs, (pg 25 1997 Dakota sale booklet) and with the optional 10,500 lb GCWR rating which is available ONLY with the 5.2 it is 6,400 lbs. Regular cab goes up to 6,800 with optional wt 10,500 GCVR. 4X4 is 200 lbs less per engine/cab/transmission type
Fine print part:
load equalizing hitches are recommended for loads over 2000, weight allances must always be reduced by the weight of optional equipement, trailer hitch, passenger(other then driver)and cargo in truck. Maximun tongue weight depends on tow weight allowance and the payload allowance See dealer for details on payload trailer weight allowances and recommeded towing practices
