Subject: Towing confusion IP: Logged
Message: I appologize but the info I found under the search feature were not very confidence inspiring.
Looking at picking up a tent trailer, but have some questions:
1) When looking at towing capacity, trailers list the best number to gauge off of as the GVWR. Is this the same number I look for in towing capacity ratings for my truck?
2) I have a 2000 dakota xtra cab 3.9L 5sp 2wd (non-towing package) truck and I love it for hauling a couple dirt bikes and friends. I think the rear diff is a 2.5:1 but I am not sure. It is most likely geared for better gas milieage than towing. I have received differing information, but my best source says my truck is rated to tow a trailer with a GVWR of 2500lbs or less. Am I close? Is there a online reference guide?
3) Is the GVWR the estimated heaviest the trailer is expected to be? Full of water, gear, clothes, propane, etc?
4) if you are a couple hundred pounds over will it kill the truck? If I am rated at 2500 and the trailer has a GVWR of 2800 as an example.
5) I know I need a receiver hitch, the size I can find out later.
6) What other ratings are important to note when finding a trailer that is proper for my truck?
I assume this question has been asked in one form or another and you guys and gals are sick of hearing it... but I figured this would be the best place to ask.
Thank you for your time,
Kevin D

Message: i know nothing about towing, but i do know that the "trailer store" or wherever you buy it (unless we're talking 2nd hand) should be able to tell you all this, or at least confirm what you learn here. if they can't, maybe you should buy elsewhere.

Message: I have a "00" DAK 3.9L 3.23 rear end and a 5 speed. I've been towing a 2500 lb popup for the last 4 tears with it. The only problem I have is
when I get into hilly areas I can't use 5th gear.
The truck is capable of 3500 lbs towing with a
class 3 or 4 hitch on it.I put a "Hidden Hitch"
on mine.

Message: I have a 2002 dakota with a 3.9 it is fated for a 5000 lb trailer with a 800 lb tounge weight. I have pulled a tent camper several times I can go down the highway at normal speeds as long as it is not the mountains. I put my own hitch on my truck and did the wiring myself. you can buy a connector for your wiring that just plugs in in about 5 minutes.
