Subject: ok to buy a used Superchips tuner?? IP: Logged
Message: I can buy a used superchips tuner (3715) for $200 plus shipping, as opposed to buying a new one for $385 shipped. The seller claims to have unlocked his VIN after he put the stock program back on the truck. Will this programmer work for me in all the same ways, including the DTC readout and code clearing, as it would if it were a "never used" piece?

Message: yep. superchips is designed for that, cuz the owner may have more than one dodge truck. once you go in and return the vehicle you tuned to stock, you can use it on another. you can use it on more than one truck, its just you can only use it on one truck at a time.

Message: Make sure it works on your truck before you finalize the deal... if it needs to be sent in to have the programs for your truck added, I've heard they won't do it unless you're the original owner and it was purchased from an authorized dealer. If he's still got the proof of purchase/receipt/whatever they require...have him send that along. At least then you can claim you're the original owner and that you bought a new Dakota or something...
They may not be as strict as that, but from what I've read...it seems that way.

Message: I should keep a reply for this problem on a file I can cut and
paste since it comes up so often and I've gone through hell on
this issue myself.
RacerX do you even own one? Because I've been through some
lessons that are 180 out from what you are saying. Not to start
a war here but the way it works (for me and through 2 private
party deals) is like this:
Once you use that unit for the first time on a vehicle it's bonded
with that vehicle's VIN. I don't care if you return your stock
program back to the PCM or not. Forget about it. Unless
someone who works for superchips trolls around and would like
to comment on this, that's the way it is. The original owner with
a sales receipt from an "authorized" dealer only would have to
send it back to superchips and get it refreshed or cleared or
whatever you want to call it so it is back to never been used
configuration.
The first unit I bought on here from someone bought his
through a group buy or ebay or something like that. So, he
didn't have a receipt. I got the unit in the mail, it didn't work,
needed an update. I called superchips and explained the
situation. They said unless the original owner has a receipt they
don't care, period. The guy was nice and let me keep the unit
and refunded my money. I junked the unit, it was a doorstop
and nothing more.
The second unit I bought also needed an update. By the way
both of these were being used on Dakotas newer than mine . I
got it, it didn't work, the guy had the receipt from an
"authorized" dealer so I shipped it back to him, he shipped it
back to stupidchips and stupidchips sent it back updated to him
and sent it back to me. Two months later the thing works great.
Superchips told me they do not authorize ANYONE online to sell
their equipment only brick and mortar stores. So if you buy
through a group buy or some private sale online and the guy
doesn't have a legit recipt, prepare to be f ucked on the deal.
Buyer beware. Doesn't matter if it's still sealed in a box and
never be used, without that golden receipt you get no support.

Message: yea i own one. bought it off ebay to begin with, and have unprogrammed it and programmed it on my friends dakota with no problems. they design it to work on one truck at a time, not one truck only.

Message: well at this point I'm not sure what to think about buying a used one. I understand that you get no support from supersh!ts if you aren't the original owner, but in my situation, I know that the part number my truck requires is 3715, and that is what the person is selling. Are you saying that even though it is the correct part number for my application, there are differences among those units? Mark, are you positive that the person you bought yours from de-programmed it correctly?

Message: im guessing thats what the problem woulda been on his. it has to be returned to stock, otherwise you could just buy one and rent it out to all your buddies and let them program all their trucks too. the 3715 will work on 98-03 dakota, durango and ram 3.9, 5.2 and 5.9s

Message: 3715 is for all of us, yes same as the 2 i bought
and yes both units i bought had been returned to stock, i made absolutely sure with the seller both times, it just needed "updating" whatever that is
hey as long as the guy selling to you bought it legit and has a receipt and will help you out when it doesn't work go for it, just trying to help you from buying a potential $200+ paperweight
