I know it has been discussed over and over again on this sight but I have to ask. If you have a stock 3.9 is it a good idea to put a 180 thermostat in?

I have heard that you will loose a little fuel mileage as well... I never really kept track of the mileage I had on my 3.9L, so Ii don't know if I lost any or not...
espacially if you live in a hot climate, a 180 is a good idea. go for it! just get a good one (JET, Stant, RobertShaw) the autozone ones are junk!! (IMHO)

The reason is that the computer thinks its needs to be a little warmer as the factory 195 F T/S setting used to be ... so it will use a little more fuel and (air)? To give you a little more power. And BY ALL means it is very relative power...you may not notice it. But a cooler engine runs better.

Doesn't work anything like that at all.
It makes more power because that's just a characteristic of this engine at that temperature.
Hotter running temp was set at 195 for emissions purposes, and probably mileage purposes.
The "relative horsepower" as you call it, probably didn't make sense for DC to go after, since it incorporated a 1 mpg hit. Which sounds better:
175 hp and 19 mpg
or
180 hp and 18 mpg
Those are some really expensive horses to a new car buyer.

It makes more power because the computers are designed to make more power at or around 182 degrees... However it will cost you more than 1 mpg, more on the lines of 1.5 or 2 depending on how much your driving habit may change or how well your computer/engine adapts to the lower temp...
You lose mileage because your computer thinks that it hasn't warmped up yet and must continue running a richer air/fuel mix to warm up...
BUT there are a whole lot of minor to some and very nice benefits to others from the 180 tstat...
To start with more power, second it will lower coolant temps in and around your heads and intake manifolds resulting in less predetination possibilities "from air pockets or combustion chamber hot spots being elliminated" and cooler air charges intering the combustion chambers...
So as you can see a few mpg is a good price to pay to protect from engine failure or "spark knock"...

Some don't lose any mileage... I thought mine did, but it ended up being a dirty injector or something cuz I'm averaging between around 18-18.5 mpg (ever since I ran a bottle of fuel system cleaner through it)...much better than I ever used to get even with the 195*F thermostat.

I've got a question about changing the t-stat so I might as well ask it here since were on the subject. Will I lose a large amount of fluid if I just unbolt the radiator hose from where the t-stat is located or should I drain some of the fluid before unbolting.

Thanks for the info.....I guess all you can do is change it and try it..it is cheap and farely easy to do. One more ? I live in Ohio, should I put the 195 degree tstat back in in the winter?

I'd wait until winter... if it throws a code, switch it back. From what I've read, you shouldn't have a problem unless it's a reaaaallly cold day.
