Subject: CB antenna? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 98 dakota with a tonneau cover on it and am wanting to put a cb in it, the only problem is i do not know where to mount the antenna since i have a tonneau cover. Does anyone know if they make an antenna mount that works with tonneau covers that will hold a 102" whip? And where I could buy it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Message: I don't have a CB, but I do have both a scanner and a fire company/police radio. I went with the very clean looking glass mounted antenna's. One on each side of the back window. You have to really look to notice them.

Message: JFH, That is exactly where I put mine for the same reason. Scanner on one side 2-way on the other. I also have a tool box mounted in the bed and have a hi- gain 2 way public service/ham radio attenna mounted in the middle I only use it in the summer. Its nice cause it actually has a base that is grounded to the frame through the tool box. I also have a tool box tonneau on it so it all looks sweet.

Message: Do the scanners pick up the local police/fire/etc bands? I saw one at Walmart that looked cool, but I dunno if it'd pick that stuff up or if you need a special one and that's what I'd use it for. Our local cops are pricks...it'd be nice to know if/when they're talking about me and my friends when we drive by.

Message: As long as there radio system is not encoded or digitally scrambled. Since you are in miami co., I know that some of there systems (i think sheriffs office and troy police) use a GE encoding system. Which means if you can hear them there will be an annoying background tone or white noise. If it is digitally scrambled it will be on 800 mhz and you will not be able to here them. Springrfield fire and police are on an ericsson system and no one can hear us unless they have a radio or portable. You can not hear on a scanner. If I were you get a bear tracker. It gives you a warning if you are withing 3 miles of OSP and has all the police and fire freq.'s built it and allows you to program your own too. That is what I have and love it. I Always know when there is a cop around.

Message: I had a bearcat with that 3 mile feature. It only works if they
trigger their radio though, you can drive right by one and not
get a warning if he ain't talking to anyone.

Message: They might pick it up, you have to know how to program them and know all the local frequencies. My fire company and local police use mainly digital witch can not get picked up by a standard scanner. My scanner is digital and was given to me to hear the local PD. My two-way is also digital but is only for fire/EMS.

Message: Mikey,
Back to the CB's. A stainless steel 102 whip is really good(The same as a 8ft fiberglass)I would say it all depends on what set-up you are installing. Personally I would use a cobra 25/ uniden 68 clipped and peaked. And run a Wilson 1000 or a Litl Will Magnet mount. the wilson 1000 is one of the best antennas out there. And remember a Cheap radio w/ a expensive ant. will often work as well or better than a expensive radio w/ a cheap ant. And Don't mess w/ the duel ant. set-ups they are big rig stuff.
