I have a problem with my brakes. Whenever the rear brakes get wet, they make a loud noise when applied. On a black-top road, they are loud. On a dirt or gravel road, they just lock up for lack of friction. I don't have a clue as to what the problem is. The noise is so loud. Also, when the emergency brake is applied, I can back up forever without any drag, but when I put the truck in first gear, it goes nowhere. Is this normal? Thanks

It's a '95 Dakota 3.9L. The light on the dash before I start the truck indicates ABS.

I pulled the drums off. I didn't see anything wrong-both sides looked the same. I took the truck to Monro Muffler-Brake about two to three months ago. The techician told me it would cost over $700. to fix. I ask him what was wrong-he didn't know. He was going to replace the calibers, pads, rotors and drums. Well, needless to say, I'm still looking for suggestions to solving the problem of squeaking brakes. Thank you

GT,
Maybe not very helpful, but here it goes. Get yourself a Haynes Manual, then read Chapter 9 (I think) about the rear breaks. Take the drums off again, completely dis-asemble the shoes, and either rebuild using the same parts, OR, (better yet) go ahead and replace both sides with new parts. It will take an afternoon, but it'll be a whole lot cheaper than $700 and I bet if you do this with new parts, it will be fixed. Sorry, but that's what I'd do first. It sucks I know. Just looking at both sides isn't really gonna help much if both sides are messed up.

If you don't really know what you are looking at (like me) things can appear to look normal or the same, when they are not. If you strip it down and rebuild it following the Haynes Manual, they should work properly, AND, you can rest better KNOWING it's right!

Daddio and 857pop-thank you for responding to my problem. I have another question. If you park a vehicle headed up a hill, set your emergency brake, put the tranny in neutral and the vehicle starts coasting backwards with no resistance-what's wrong with the emergency brake? Please help!

Shouldn't park it in neutral on a slope cuz that's just asking for it to take off rolling...but if it was for testing purposes, it could be slack in the cable (cable needs replaced) which is preventing the brakes from tightening all the way. Could also be the "self-tensioner" which sucks...it might need tightened up some. I can't recall how to do that exactly. It involves spinning the wheel and using a screwdriver to spin this lil gear on the tensioner until the brake just starts to put a little tension on the wheel...or something like that.

Thanks Josh for the ideas. To answer your question about parking on hill-I don't. That was used for example. These brakes, once they get wet, gives off a loud screeching noise-like dragging your fingernails across a chalkboard-it puts a schrill up your back. Can you imagine driving down a quiet street and then have to stop for a stop sign or red light-it's embaressing. Thanks for the help!

hmmm sounds like worn out brake shoes with all that noise
or if not... u can deglaze the drums and use brake grease on the shoes

also (i dont know if this applys to the brakes in our trucks)some brake setups only have maximum braking force when moving in certain directions

GT, maybe try scuffing up the shoes with a little 100 or 220 grit sandpaper. how does the drum surface look? if everythign looks good you may want to change the shoes and turn the drums.
your e-brake should hold.
