Message: Here's a checklist for you outcast,
Disconnect negative battery cable
Release fuel pressure
Disconnect the Fuel feed line from the tank
(this is where you pump gas into the tank)
(there are two hoses for this, one big, one small)
Unplug tail lights, and disconnect spare tire rod
Unscrew the bolts holding the bed down
Move bed back to get access to the fuel pump
Disconnect hoses and sending unit connector from fuel pump.
Unscrew the plastic nut on top of the tank, pull out fuel pump and fix it.
Reinstall in reverse order. Let us know how it goes.

Message: i followed 857pops advice for looking at the small circuit board on the side of the sending unit and sure enough there was scorch marks. I tried doing what was said and using an eraser but it would not work. So I got some sandpaper and lightly sanded away the black marks. Have to be careful though, if you press to hard it will totally remove the contacts then your screwed.
Anyway, hooked it up to an ohmeter and got exactly the resistance that the hayes manual said I was supposed.
Two weeks later the fuel gauge is working perfect. Thanks for the tip.
PS - Definetly go the taking the box off route. Done it twice now. Took me and a few air tools, 20 min, and my bro to help me lift it off. Piece of cake.
