Subject: Possible Transmission problems???? HELP! IP: Logged
Message: Hey what's up. I just recently bought a used 98 dakota sport from a dealer nearby. The truck has been great. Just put a new intake and exhaust on it and it's been good til recently. It still runs like normal but there is a loud jangling sound coming from somewhere around the transmission it seems. It also seems to happen once i've been driving for a few minutes. Maybe it happens when the engine and tranny warms up? I noticed a rather small cylindrical device mounted to the left hand side of the tranny. I'm not sure what it is, perhaps a pump or something but it seems like the sound could be coming from there. It's a loud sound, even louder than my new exhaust. It is extremely annoying but looking in the engine bay, tapping on nearly everything, i've come to the conclusion that its not something I can tap on or obviously see. I am perplexed and i've also noticed that my check engine light is now on. I'm shifting fine...what is that device?
Thanks!

Message: if your check engine light is on, you can read the fault code. What's the code?

Message: are you sure it isn't coming from the other side of the tranny? could be a bad catalytic converter

Message: Well... I already know my catalytic converter is bad. As a matter of fact it's gutted. It actually gutted itself into my old muffler. But since I got the exhaust changed, i figure that shouldn't be a problem... I'm not sure what the fault code is. I hear there might be a way for me to check the code without a computer... through the digital odometer but thats just something I heard. Is there any way for me to check the fault code without taking it to a mechanic? I do have access to a machine here on base for about 5 bucks but hey if there is a free way to do it, i'm all ears. But could it be the catalytic converter? I figured that since it's been gutted out there should be no noise. The noise occurs when I hit the gas so I don't know. It just seems like it's around that area. I'm open to any suggestions.
Thanks!

Message: The 98's will not do a self scan you will have to go to autozone and get it scanned. Your noise sounds like something left in the catcon. Do us all a favor and buy a new cat. get a carsound cat from Summit racing.

Message: Hey really?,
How does the Ram self-scan. I have a 96 Ram, and I can't get anything to come up. I even unplugged an injector and plugged it back in, just to get the check engine light to come on, and I still couldn't get anything to come up!
Frustrating as heck!

Message: Turn key to on position (not start), off, on, off, on...leave it on the 3rd time. Should flash the codes. Dunno how Ram's do it, I'd imagine the same way. That method works in Dakota's up to 1997. 1998 requires the use of a scanner, 99 can go through the instrument panel diagnostics I think, 00 and up require a scanner. Not sure if that's exactly right, but it's close...

Message: I guess after 98 and 99 they decided the old way was better...I sure wish my 98 had the self-scan.

Message: I took my truck down to autozone... they scan it for free. Turns out the fault code meant the engiine idles low. So it didn't seem like a big deal to me. It idles at 800-900. Seems normal to me, maybe just a glitch or something. But it still doesn't explain the stupid noise down by my tranny. It's a rattling sound...like something is loose. Sounds like a bell actually. It's really irritating...

Message: This may sound stupid but if you changed the exhaust yourself and used clamps it is possible that one of the clamps have come loose causing the bell sound. I have a 94 Pontiac that had a similar sound and that was the problem.
