Subject: Dual Exhaust? IP: Logged
Message: New to being a Dodge owner, but loving every minute of it. 1992 Dakota Sport w/V-6 3.9 engine and automatic transmission. I am thinking of putting dual exhaust in to get more of a V-8 sound and more power. Any suggestions as to whether to split the exhaust or not? What kind of Muffler(s)?
Hoping to not make the same mistake I did with my Nissan which ended up sounding like a waterlogged trumpet. LOL

Message: dual exhaust is a good choice for the sporty look and throatier sound, it cost about 250 or so. if you get it, it is better not to get the pipes more than 2.25" although i was told that 2" is plenty for the v6. as far as the muffler brand, i think the performance would be the same but sound would differ. dynomax, magnaflow, flowmaster, mbrp, etc. are all good brands. i have a flowmaster 40 series single 2.5 in/out and it sounds good, so i would think with duals it would sound even better. try looking up a few muffler sites and most have soundbytes you can listen to, although most are v8's it'll give you an idea of what you want. good luck with it.

Message: From the sound of it your wanting to run "TRUE" duals... Am I right on this??? Big mistake would be all that you would obtain... And unless you have a highly modded motor you will kill any kind of low end even from the single to cat back dual exhaust... Yes it does sound nice dualed off, but you have to understand that a gas engine esspecially the magnums require back pressure to acquire the torque that they have, unlike a deisel which is better off not having any back pressure...
Now if you do have modded intake and any kind of head work you can and more than likely will gain from the freer flowing exhaust system...
If this is the fact than I would recommend doing something like this...
headers --- gibson or jba's "will give you a more racking off sound while decelerating and of course equal back pressure to each cylinder and flow from each cylinder"
carsound cat --- gives the exhaust a deeper tone + is in the same category of high flow cat's = better flow
any muffler you want --- I recommend gibson or flowmaster "flowmaster gives you the flowmaster sound whereas the gibson will give you a more v8 to a big block sound
then dual off from there on back
I'm currently running the gibson headers, carsound cat, and gibson cat back system and I love it... The sound is not too loud but at the same time it has that v8/big block sound... I've been told by a lot that it sounds better than most v8's they've heard and even been questioned by a few whether I actually had a v6 under the hood...
BUT again unless you've got some engine work done the dual exhaust will absolutely kill your low end which is why most will tell you just to change out your muffler and leave the rest of the exhaust stock...

Message: I have a quick question and please don't give me crap about this but here it goes. Would headers for a v8 engine fit on a v6 engine? I know that it will take some modificating of course on the headers themselves but would the bolt holes line up and would it fit in there just like v6 headers should after mods were done

Message: cut a hole in each side of the hood
weld a piece of pipe to each extra tube
and run it straight through the holes in the hood
